Lump under arm

I went to my doctor last month because I felt a lump under my arm. She said she doesn't think it's anything to worry about and to come back for a follow up after I have my mammogram. I had my mammogram on monday and went to her today. The mammogram came back negative but the lump is still there. She said she doesn't think it's anything to worry about but she's sending me to a specialist for a second opinion. I'm a nervous wreck.

Can mammograms detect lumps under to arms?

These lumps don't really feel like lumps. They feel more like muscles. They're not round. They are more long (like when I press on it, I can feel it as I move my finger along my armpit. This is in both of my arms but one isn't as bad as the other.

Any suggestions on what it could be?

Thank You,

Bernice

Re: Lump under arm

Hi Bernice, there are lymph nodes under your armpit which swell if there is an infection present..could be that..glad your getting a second opionion from a specialist..maybe they could do an ultrasound or MRI to help ease your mind..
best wishes,
cj.

Re: Lump under arm

Thank you for your reply. If it was lymph nodes, wouldn't my doctor be able to tell that? She told me that she doesn't think it was anything to worry about but she wants me to see a specialist to confirm it. But I'm still worried about it. Would a mammogram show the area under the arm?

I think they should have done a diagnostic mammogram. I would ask for an ultrasound of the area.

Good luck and it hope it all goes well for you.

Re: Lump under arm

I too, have a lump like you describe under my right arm pit only. I am going in for a diagnostic Mammogram and ultrasound on June 1st. This was the earliest they could get me in. My dr. told me most likely nothing to worry about. I asked if it was a lymph node and she didn't think so, but said it was most likely a fatty cyst or tumor. I would be curious to know what you find out about yours.

Re: Lump under arm

What would an ultrasound detect? Fatty tissue? A muscle? I'm going to call my doctor and ask he if we can do that first (or in the meantime while waiting for my insurance company to approve a specialist and then it might take awhile to get in to see them).

I have them in both armpits but one is more felt than the other. Please let me know how you make out and what yours are. Are fatty cyst/tumors serious?

Thank you,

Bernice

Are fatty cysts/tumors long like a muscle and when you press on it, you can feel it as you move your fingers along your armpit? Or are they round lumps (which isn't what I feel)?

Re: Lump under arm

Hi Guys,
Just reading your posts. I actually had a swollen lymp node under my left armpit, which my family doctor told me nothing to worry about because it moved around and was squishy. I went back in two weeks to have it checked again and she said same thing. I am 39 and have been going for mamos since 35 because of my mother having breast cancer 18 years ago. I was scheduled for my mamo at end of April and made my doctor move it up to March. Found out I had breast cancer in my left breast. Had a bilateral mast on April 12. The cancer had spread to 4 of the left nodes under my left arm pit. Yours hopefully in absolutely nothing. THey say 80% of lumps are benign. I would just push for a mamo, mri and biopsy if needed. Take care, Best of luck.

Re: Lump under arm

Hi Khilt08, If it is still there I would have her have it checked. It could be anything, how big is it? Sometimes swollen lymph nodes are the result of an infection or scratch. Could be a pimple. Mine moved around. Just for a piece of mind make her have it checked, it might just go away.

Re: Lump under arm

I made a post about arm pit pain. I do feel a lump now but only when my arm is almost down. It does move but I can not squish it. Very odd. I can not find it at all when my arm is up?

I hope anyone else with lumps gets good news as well. It isnt fun to find no matter where it is is it? Cancer runs ramped in my family.

Did you get the results back from your mammogram and ultrasound yet? I'm going to the specialist tomorrow and he's going to do an ultrasound. I'm a nervous wreck. I hope everything is alright.
