MRI vs. mammography

Is it true that for people who have strong family history f ovarian and breast cancer is it recommended to have MRIs instead of Mammographies (because of the radiations?)

Please let me know, I am trying to figure this out .... is there any phone number I can call?

My OBGYN is vague about it but agrees to this theory to a certain level.

Thank you.

Re: MRI vs. mammography

Hi Hopee, Its my understanding that MRI's are more useful in detecting cancer in dense breast tissue. I have not heard that it should be used in place of a mammo..what I have read is that it should be used in addition to. You can contact your local American Cancer Society..I am sure that they can give you some recommendations!
Hope you get the answers you are looking for,
best wishes to you,
cj.
