How do I find the best doctors? - Cancer: Breast Message Board

I was just diagnosed with DCIS - Nuclear Grade 3 (i'm assuming that's stage 3?) so I am new here. Is there any hospital or facility that is the best in America for dealing with breast cancer? i will go anywhere - I live in Pgh. but plan to get a second opinion somewhere. I have 2 young children & I will do anything or go anywhere to have the best care & doctors so I know for sure I will beat this. My gyny recommended a breast surgeon, but how do I know if he/she is good?
Has anyone dealth with Cancer Centers of America? Or are their commercials all hype?

Where you get treated makes all the difference. In NYC, Sloan Kettering
Memorial Hospital...be prepared to bring slides and biopsy reports...the
same with Johns Hopkins in Maryland. I spend a lot of days at Sloan for
my friend and I can tell you...you're treated very well and you have the
best of doctors....BUT...you need the right coverage...look at their
website....if it's just for a second opinion and you can afford it, pay for
it, it's worth it. They take each case to a full committee before making
any decision.

Hi Ftreloar,

Welcome to the board. Sorry it is under these circumstances though. Mapel had a good recommendation there. Also, every state has a AMA board and you can call them and there is also a website for each state for finding a doctor. You can find out if a doc is good as far as if they have had any malpractice complaints or if their license haws been suspended, etc.

Most places you call will usually only give you 3 names as they aren't allowed to say only one docs name. They don't consider that good ethics is why. Could your primary care doc recommend anyone???

Also there are a lot of Breast Care Clinic that have good doctors. Thats where I go.

Pittsburgh must have a good teaching hospital. They say teaching hospitals are the best. If you should need chemo or radiation, nothing beats being close to the center where you are being cared for. There also are many other cancer sights online, where you can get info from other women, and their experience. Unfortunaely I cannot name them on here. So my advise would be to search around. Especially look up breast cancer stages. All the best to you
