Abnormal Mammo & UltraSound - Dr Recommending Lumpectomy?

I had my usual Mammogram last week.

Called back for a Compression Mammo and UltraSound on Wednesday morning. Doctor called today with results.

I have a family history of breast cancer - my Mother.

They have been watching an area ever since I turned 40 - I am 47 now. The same thing is showing up but it has been getting larger. UltraSound showed cysts in this area but it is complex because it is showing Liquids and Solids.

Lesions do not look normal and they cannot say that it's not cancer. If it isn't cancer now they said this type of tissue could become cancer. Area is 3.4 CM.

Option 1 - Biopsy but 50% chance even a biopsy will come back inconclusive [that is what happened with my Mom's]. If it is negative - watch it every 3-6 months.

Option 2 - Lumpectomy to remove the entire suspected area. Doctor is highly suggesting Option 2 since I have a family history. The tissue that is removed would be sent for a biopsy. He has recommended a breast surgeon.

Ofcourse my head is just spinning right now.

I think I would go with option #2 so as to remove all doubt and to ease the worry. It would probably be more cost effective in the long run.

I would go with option #2 also. I'm no expert but have had lumpectomy recently, have done some research on different sites. I hope this helps you make your choice. Terri

I would definately go for number 2 too, i had a lump which they were happy to leave and keep returning just to check but i knew in my mind i would be uneasy so i had the lump removed, fortunatelyy the biopsy came back all clear and at least i felt at rest and glad i had it done.

Im waiting for another core biopsy on a lump again, i dont know whether i want it removed this time if they are not sure, i think the 2nd time round i dont feel as worked up, saying that if the lump is always there and if its really notivceable like mine under the arm then i will always be wondering, will see what the tests show up 1st.

Good luck whatever you decide.

Option 2 would be my choice--take it out so that you hopefully do not have to go back in a second time.

Re: Abnormal Mammo & UltraSound - Dr Recommending Lumpectomy?

Good Luck

I had that in 2005. It really is not a bad procedure. My surgery was scheduled for 7:00am and I was home eating lunch by 12:30. Two days later I was doing a complete cleaning of my house because we were moving to a new house that day. I of course was pretty tired. So be good to yourself this weekend.

Lets us know what the pathology shows.

wovenwonder,
I just came upon your post today and it is now 4/3 and wondering how your biopsy went?
How are you feeling? did they get back the results yet?

I hope it is negative and that you are feeling well.
Hope you get this reply.

Sincerely,

Linda
