lump on left areola and swollen armpit - Cancer: Breast Message Board

Hi everyone...

I am fairly new to all this...
Well about a year and a half ago i had a son, six months later i noticed a small lump on my left areola...went to the doctors and told me not to worry about it and that it wasnt any serious...i still have the lump and i guess that the good thing is that it hasnt grown...but lately for the past 2 months, when i have my period my left underarm tends to get swollen and it hurts. I felt for lumps and dont feel any..Im very worried cause i dont wanna think i have breast cancer! Im 23 years old and am very very scared!

Please help!!!

Hi Minnie - I agree that your age makes it improbable that you would have breast cancer. However, you are understandably concerned about the lump and underarm soreness. Stress can cause illness all by itself, so my advice would be to go to a oncologist-gyn to check this. He has experience in this area and can either reassure you or suggest that you have an ultrasound or MRI, if he feels it is necessary. As they say, 'it's your body'.
No doctor would blame you for being cautious. Good luck!

Start with a mammogram and go from there. You can schedule yourself for one (without doctor orders) that will give you a baseline of where your breasts are at.

Minnie, you need to be your best advocate and get this checked out by your doctor. Do not let the doctors tell you have nothing to worry about because of your age. Age really has nothing to do with breast cancer these days, women your age are fighting this disease as we speak. Insist on a mammogram and ultrasound.
