Does BC run in families?

My MIL passed away after having breast cancer for the second time. I have a young daughter and am wondering if she could be more suseptible to this since her paternal grandmother had it. Does it carry easier from one side of the family than the other? Just wondering for the sake of my child's future. Thanks.

Re: Does BC run in families?

My breast surgeon the other day told me "JUST BEING A WOMAN" puts a woman at risk. where as they used to say if you had a family member such as a sister or mother increased the risk. that really scared me. she finished her sentence by telling me they have no idea what is causing such an increase in breast cancer.
she goes by putting together past family history of any type of cancer, plus the patients history of cancer and illnesses they have and adds the data up and comes up with a percentage of risk. she said that 20% puts a person at high risk. so 20% and above puts the person at a higher risk and needs to have other modalities of screening performed other than just a mammogram.
which would include, a *****, an ultra-sound and a breast MRI, every year.

I was only going for the ***** and now I'm told I'm at 30% risk, because of my two sisters having breast cancer, plus other reproductive cancers in family, plus dad died of colon cancer and I JUST found out yesterday by my older sister that one of my Aunts in Slovakia had breast cancer too! My sister was surprised my mother never told me this when my mom was alive.

so yes, having close relatives, such as sisters, mother, grandmother, pus a woman at a higher risk, but i also found out that they really only want to do the genetic testing on a woman that has already been diagnosed with breast cancer and not the woman who's never had it yet.
becuase I was once told years ago by a gynocologist that I should go for genetic testing. now it's years later and they've changed it to the other way around. the person WITH the breast cancer needs to be genetically tested for a specific gene to see if it will run in the family.

I wish you the best outcome,

sincerely,
Linda

Re: Does BC run in families?

I am still amazed by the respones that doctors give on BC, or any cancer for that matter! What really amazes me is when a doctor says "we dont know what causes it or why it is increasing at such a dramatic rate".

I have a question for you and anyone that has Cancer. Do you think a person just gets cancer for no reason? It is a very simple process! It is WHAT you are putting in your mouth, PERIOD! Do genetics play a role in cancer? YES! Unfortunately when people decide to have children they pass on much of their genetic make up! If a person has a diet heavy in processed foods and void of organic nutrients (which is what the body MUST have) they will alter their genetics and pass this on to their children and so on and so on through generations, PERIOD! This is not a mystery that doctors would have you believe. It is simply a lackof care and maintanence for the most important thing you have...you body, and your childrens bodies!
Can a person turn this around??? YES!! Is it easy? For some it is, and for others its not! How you ask? A complete lifestyle change, period, if you dont believe this then stop reading now... If in any stage of cancer you have a battle of cell productions going on in your body! And cancer cells can multiply 6 time a second while healthy cells 2-3 times a day! IN which case you better get busy and start killing cancer cells instead of continuing to feed them! How come your doctor does not tell you this??? Does he know how to kill a cancer without filling your body full of chemo or drugs with deadly side effects? Will if doesnt know then he should! This is very perplexing to me?? The true answer is a body simply cannot protect itself at all when you are not giving it what it needs! It is like sending US soldiers into a war with NO weapons and expect them to come out alive! If a person is in any stage of cancer, the solution is that .... You must tailor a specific dietlifstyle change immediately based on your current condition and stick to it! You can kill a cancer cell without chemo and you can turn a cancer gene off, if you know what to do!
But this is all done with food! I am not talking about all the 'food-like substances you buy at the grocery store that come in a box! That is not FOOD! And is the most major cause of ill health!! Period, no mystery! Did you know that certain foods feed cancer cells in person that already has cancer? I am talking about foods that would otherwise be considered good in a healthy person! Unfortunately cancer patients are never told what and what not to eat when they are sick and dying unnecessarily. Many times they are sent home with a cases of "insure"(a milk based product", and told to drink that since they are so sick to their stomach from chemo. Unfortunately, dairy products and milk feed cancer cells! Great, huh? This is a crime and goes on every single day. Look I am not here to provoke dispute on this or that. I am on this site for one reason, to educate folks that believe there is an answer, they just dont know what. If you really knew the inside of body and how a cell good or bad developes you would better understand what I am talking about. Its is simple a physiological condition the can go this way or that way based on what you are putting in your piewhole! And I am willilng to share what I know with folks that have been told there is no hope. People, do you expect your neighbor to change the oil in your car, inflat the tires, flush the cooling system, put gas in it?? Then why or how can you expect to have your body working correctly free of illness, when you do not give it what it simply needs to do the job???? Then you go to the doctor and say, "how come I am sick"? And worse yet, him not tellng or knowing the simple physiological process's that occur when you don't give your body real food! Do you want a temporary fix, because that is eactly what you get every time,(ie, cutting cancer out, removing organ tissure, etc.) when you dont make a change from what made you sick to begin with! The bottom line is this. Do you want to be healthy or not? You can't have it both ways........meaning, I want to eat what i want when i want and then expect to have a good quality of life or life at all! Its that simple. You are going to age faster and die sooner, many with sufferring if you continue down the same road. If you want to change to a better road, then it is here for you. I am going to run out of space on this post if I havnt already.

If you do not believe that food can either heal or kill then sadly, we are wasting each others time. The reward for simply taking the emotion out of food, and eating for the purpose of life.... IS a long life with your family WITHOUT illness! Is that workth it?
Sincerely,
Daniel

PS. If I sound a little blunt in this post, please know its not directed at any of you folks, it comes from the so called experts/people out their that are not giving you your very best options for healing and cure of your illness.

Re: Does BC run in families?

Statistics say about 10% of breast cancers are genetic. Generally speaking the younger the diagnosis the more likely it is to be genetic. Your daughter may be at a slightly higher risk, depending on what age her Grandmother was diagnosed and if any other family members have had it. Your husband would have to carry the faulty gene to pass it onto your daughter which would also put him at risk. If he has sisters who've had it or get it in the future that would put your daughter at a higher risk. The risk is the same weather it's maternal or paternal. Breast cancer is also associated with uterine and bowel cancer. I live in Australia and since they discovered a slight increase in breast cancers in women who have been on long term HRT, the incidence of breast cancer in women over 50 has dropped. This of course is wonderful news and hopefully it will continue to drop as more women don't go on or stop taking HRT.

Re: Does BC run in families?

DBoone,
I agree with you 100% with your reply on food and disease.

I wish doctors would start studying this in med school and stop supporting the pharmecutical companies with their so called cure for all the different illnesses with their toxic medications that wind up being taken off the shelf eventually or it winds up causing another disease of the body and horrible side effects.

We need to learn how to eat all over again.

It's not easy, but when you start feeling the results, you want to do more!
I'm just learning this new path of life. they call it the "new biology".
so good to hear others are pursuing this way of life. The way our bodies are supposed to be. but through out the years the food industries and drug industries have swayed us away from proper eating and getting the necessary supplements and minerals we're supposed to be getting from healthy choices of foods.
it is the food we put into our bodies without a doubt.
I commend you for writing such a chunkfull of wealthy information for us all to learn from.
