Question just had a core needle biopsy

Hi,
I'm new to the group and had just had a core needle biopsy done on the 4/4/12. Still waiting on results and joined to actual seek support and comfort during this long waiting period for results. I went with a second opinion after the first surgeon suggested that an open biopsy was the only option for me. He didn't even discuss with me about needle biopsy until I asked about it. He said then that I'm not a good candidate for a needle biopsy. SO I left his office and found another doctor who is a breast specialist and he did a core needle biopsy on both breasts. I think you should really seek a second and a third opinion if needed before you make your choice. Its a big decision, and since I'm only 34 years old, I need to know all there is to know before you open me up and take a big chunk of my tissue from my breast. So please be inform about all your options before making an educated decision, I know I did! The wait for the result is killing me!

Re: Excisional biopsy recommended for possible benign mass

Soyaandpepper: I think it was very, very, brilliant to be sooo on the ball about the health care decisions you make. When that little voice inside starts saying "This just doesn't sound right" it is best to listen. I am glad you are in the care of a breast surgeon, this is where you needed to be. Core/needle biopsy's are state of the art. You did good girl! . Now.... the wait. Arrrrgh I hate the wait. So many of these things come back benign. My advice is try not to go over the top with worry. I don't know anything else about your suspicious bumps and hope the tests come back as ok. Hang in there.... lots of us here have been through this procedure and it sounds, to me, you have done the right and correct thing. Please keep us posted... I know what it is like to wait. Doctors are so aware of litigation, they biopsy nearly everything. Again, hang in there.... Please let us know how it all turns out.... we know what it's like. Take care, Sharon

Soyaandpepper: One more thing... DON'T go wandering the internet reading stories, it will only terrify you. Lots of it is out of date, not factual, really doesn't pertain to you, etc. Stay off the internet and do something fun like retail therapy. Again.... positive thoughts going your way. Sharon

Re: just had a core needle biopsy

uptownJ: Thanks for all the support! I read quite a bit of your opinions in this thread. I have in reality one (1) girlfriend in total and she's younger than me, she's 29 and really don't have much to say about it except that everything is going to be all right. That's why I joined this group. Its nice to talk to women who went through and going through the same thing as me. I found a lump on my right breast about 5 weeks ago, not from self breast exam but just by passing my hand over my breast (its that obvious). I also had another one on my left breast for a few years now from when I was in my 20s', that one I went to the ob/gyn at that time checked it and told me its nothing to worry about so I left it and its been there for like 5 years. So after I found the new one on the right, I went to my doctor ( Family doctor), and he sent me to do an ultrasound right away. The result came back that the old one is a fibroadenoma but the new one has some mild irregularities around the edges so he referred me to a surgeon and the rest is the story you read in the thread. I'm still waiting on the results and I feel like I'm really in limbo. Its just the not knowing part that's killing me right now and then the possibilities of it being cancer is really mind blowing.

Re: just had a core needle biopsy

Just curious, why would you not be a candidate for a needle biopsy? I'm glad you got a 2nd opinion & hope you only hear good news.

Re: just had a core needle biopsy

Harmoney: I don't know what that Surgeon was thinking about! He's just a general Surgeon and not a breast surgeon so my guess is that the open biopsy was more money for him to make. Since in my country they are private doctors. I'm not from the US, I'm Trinidad and Tobago if you guys know where that is. It's an island in the Caribbean. Our government health care is 3rd world to say the least and we have to pay out of our pocket or if we have health insurance. Well, my results came back and it is CANCER. Bummer!!!! I found out last week and the news shocked me to the core, but having time to cry and all of that, I'm dealing with it now. I don't want this cancer to define me, its what I have not what I am. I'm going to beat it.

Re: just had a core needle biopsy

I'm so sorry you had to hear the words you have cancer. I know what that's like; it is one of the worst things someone can hear. It is very scary.

It has now been 11 yrs. for me, I just went through my ordeal of them doing extra pictures, and I fear big time about the atypical lobular hyperplasia. I'm sorry about your health care. Even though I am in the U.S. believe me I have terrible insurance I have to pay a high price for. I have to pay increased rates and be punished because I made the mistake of getting cancer. I risk being dropped all the time because I don't have the safety of a group plan & so I have to be on an individual plan. I know it doesn't make sense, but it is unfair. We have to go through enough without worrying about not getting good health care too.

Keep on moving on girl, you can get through this. It does get better with time, but the fear can never leave us until we hear they've found a cure. I can't believe they haven't found one yet.

Re: just had a core needle biopsy

Wow, S&P - we are one in the same. I am 34 and just had my core needle biopsy on 4/18/12 but they said my results would be back in 24-48 hours. Today is when I should get the call. Did they place a clip in you? They placed a clip in my left breast and then I will meet with the Breast Surgeon on 4/26/12 to schedule a lumpectomy for the left side and explorative surgery on the right due to a bloody nipple discharge. They found a cluster of what they assume are cysts right behind the nipple on the right side and were just going to follow up in 6 months with another ultrasound, but I spoke up and said, I have spontaneous bloody discharge from that area and I don't think that waiting 6 months is going to help me at all!! I'm already crawling the walls waiting for the results...it's driving me insane. I like the other advice about not looking on line, I made the mistake of doing that before I found this site and it is scary and unuseful. I just read your reply before posting this, I am so sorry that you have to navigate the cancer journey, I found a great book at B&N called something like sexy cancer, the foreword was by Sheryl Crow, the woman doesn't have breast cancer, but has pancreatic or liver cancer, anyway...she turned it in to an adventure and documented everything through pictures and journal entries. You should check it out, it was inspiring. You are in my thoughts as I wait for my results to come back. Fingers crossed.

Re: just had a core needle biopsy

Hi KellyMT: No they didn't put a clip in me. I know exactly how you feel right now and its really NOT a place anybody wants to be. I'm praying and keeping my fingers cross for you too. But I'm a little confused, you said that you're still waiting for results of your biopsy right? Is it on both breast or just the left one? And how come you're already meeting with a surgeon to do lumpectomy already and you don't know if your result of the biopsy? And also, are you saying that they're doing an open biopsy on your right breast or just opening your breast to see what's in there?

Re: just had a core needle biopsy

It's confusing to me as well! We have a Breast Center where I live and there is a "Breast Navigator" who walks you through everything. On Tuesday (17th) I had a mammo and an ultrasound, on Wednesday (18th) I had an attempted fine needle aspiration, which quickly turned to a core needle biopsy as there was no fluid in the "area". Yesterday (19th) the Breast Navigator called and said that the Breast Surgeon is thinking we should just remove the area, even though the results aren't in yet, just to be safe.

She also wants to further investigate what is going on in my right breast that is causing it to spontaneously bleed, so she will either explore it through surgery or through the nipple and in to the ducts. I dont' know what is going on...it's all happening so quickly. They just keep suggesting these things. I think one reson for the surgical intervention is that I was not ok with just watching/waiting for 6 months for whatever is making blood seep from my nipple.

I don't know if that helped to explain it, or made it more confusing! I didn't know why either, and asked and she just said that the Surgeon decided to just remove it after hearing about everything. I suppose if the results come back today and they are positive for the big "C", they will be doing the same thing anyway, so why not just do it pre-emptively?

Again, as I said, it is happening so quickly that I haven't even had time to think through the reasoning. I am just grateful to everyone involved through the Breast Center because they aren't just brushing it off as nothing and are being very proactive in the whole thing.

Re: just had a core needle biopsy

Went in in June of last year for a mammogram immediately went to have ultrasound afterward and then two days later had biopsy. The worst part is the numbing shots had one on breast and one under my arm. You are right the waiting is the hardest part. My house was spotless. My dogs were washed toilets cleaned, refrigerator cleaned out. Worry adds not a cubit to your stature. My prayers and support go to you.

Re: just had a core needle biopsy

To KellyMT: Hope that you get your results by now and its good news! Of course if the result came back that you have BC then they will do the surgery but you need to do some research on your own and see what's the best option if it turns out that it really is BC. I just have my app with my doctor and he's telling me a lot of options I have. Its good that the'er concern about you and that they're not just waiting around but you also don't want to do this lumpectomy and then finds out that your margins are not cleared and have to go back in to remove more tissue or even a mastectomy. Go to the app and see what the doctor have to say on the 26th, by then you would know for sure whether you have BC or not but please do your own research. I went on the net and read all about the different types of BC and staging and grading of cancer even before my biopsy was done. I know a lot of people say don't google anything cause it'll drive you crazy, I agree that you shouldn't go and assume you have everything but its good to go on the reputable sites and read and educate yourself about it. Please let me know how things went. Will be thing about you. I found out that I have stage 1, grade 2 Invasive Ductal Carcinoma.

Re: just had a core needle biopsy

Soyaandpepper, I am so sorry about your diagnosis. I had stage 3 ductile carcinoma that spread to two lymph nodes. I am through with chemo and have had a mastectomy and finished 28 days of radiation. My tumor responded well to chemo. It was so large and my breast so small therefore it had to be removed. Please stay aware of your options and know what medications you are on. One of the scariest things I noticed when I was going through chemo is how many women just blindly followed their oncologist. Yes he's or she's a doctor but know what they are doing and when and why they are doing it. Write everything down and ask questions and write answers down. Good luck, my prayers are with you.

Re: just had a core needle biopsy

Thanks txjam for your support! So you had chemo before your mastectomy and then Radiation? Wow that's a lot of stuff to take in. I'm really sorry you had to go through all of that. I was told that when you have mastectomy, you don't need radiation. How come you had it? I hope you don't mind me asking but was just wondering and want to find out as much as possible, and how long was your journey to now? How many rounds of chemo? My doctor want to operate with in the next 10 days and I still have to decide on the options I have. Thanks a million!
