not sure what to think or do

in early March I had a baseline mammogram done that showed irregularities in the left breast. Since there was nothing to compare to and a family history of breast cancer an ultrasound was ordered and completed and it was determined to be a benign cyst but was told to come back for a follow up mammogram in 6 months.

Fast forward to today. Ever since that time my left breast has felt "different" to me, I have tried to chalk it up to my just being nervous and scared that the 6 month will show something more but it has never been an actual physical feeling just an emotional feeling really any time it itches or I examine my left breast I expect there to be some major sign that says cancer. Well tonight it physically feels different. Not really sure how else do describe it other than my right breast is softer and less solid than the left. I have had a hysterectomy so I don't keep track of when my cycle would be but I am only 42 so a little early for any type of menopause type symptoms. Should I call my doctor or wait a couple of days and see if this is just a cycle based change?

Re: not sure what to think or do

Please contact your doctor again and tell him/her what you are feeling and about your fear. It would also be perfectly fine to get a second opinion. You might also think about requesting an MRI. They can help diagnose things a mammogram or ultrasound can't. Your breast may have very dense tissue which might make it feel different to the touch. You also might be going into perimenopause and your doctor can check your hormone levels with simple blood test. For your own peace of mind, check in with your doctor again. It just isn't good to be this worried for the next 4 months. You need to get some additional testing for reassurance. Take care, Sharon

Re: not sure what to think or do

Well, I have been putting it off thinking it would resolve itself but it isn't going away. I know one of the medications that I have been put on in the past few months has a known side effect of breast changes but I can't imagine that the changes would only occur on one side. I am going to call the Dr.'s office tomorrow and speak to his nurse. My daughter graduates next Sunday so this is not the best time to try and squeeze in appt. for me but I will do what I need to for peace of mind. It is hard to explain the difference between my two breasts other than the left is heavier and solid where the right is not as heavy and has a more sponge like for lack of a better description feeling.

Re: not sure what to think or do

Health question never seem to come at a convenient time....sigh. I am very glad you are contacting the office because this change in only one breast is odd and not normal. Insist on an appointment as you need to be examined again. Knowing what I know now, I would request an MRI. Please keep us posted. Take care, Sharon
