HAD A LEEP? I have option to do awake or asleep..HELP!!!

Ladies,
I got my biopsies back today, still High grade Severe dysplasia so I need the Leep ( the ECC biopsy/scraping came back negative!!!). I have a choice to be alseep or awake, and I have to make a decision in the next several days. I know the benefits of being asleep are that you feel nothing during the procedure, but I am nervous about being put under, as it can be an added uncessary risk. On the flip side Im kind of nervous about being awake Only because I dont know what to expect. So Im asking those who have had this procedure for advice! Also I cant have the epinepherine shot, so I will be cauterized either way.
It is also much less money to have it done awake in the office...as the bill for the hospital, anesthesiologist, Dr, etc all add up (My insurace pays 70 % until I hit my deductible)
Thanks in advance to anyone who offers advice,
Kelly

Re: HAD A LEEP? I have option to do awake or asleep..HELP!!!

im doing the same thing w/ a cone and am scared of going totally under but dedided to do it. you dont move at all and they can be more precise and successful with you not moving, even when you're numb but awake you do move a little and it can make the surgery harder. plus they are very very short procedures so the amt of anesthesia is small, i was soooo scared to but my dr really explained it to me and i was convinced

good luck

i had the leep and was awake - its not that bad.... it takes like 1 min and she was done the longest things were her setting up and getting ready then afterwards sitting till the bleeding slows down 15 min or so.. other than that it was a peice of case your biopsy took way much longer than the leep will. or atleast mine did. hope that helps

What about the epinepherine shot,,,,can they do it without awake? Has anyone ever had the leep awake without the epi? Also my biopsy results are in and I have HSIL CIN 2 on one lesion and CIN 3 on the other.
Thanks
Kelly

Re: HAD A LEEP? I have option to do awake or asleep..HELP!!!

I had a Leep last week and had it done under general. I had a choice and opted to be asleep so I wouldn't know what was going on. I did get nervous prior to going into surgery even though I have been under general anesth. several times before. I have had a couple of colposcopys and a lot of smears which have never worried me, but when it came to having the cells removed, I for some reason could not face being aware of what was going on.

I was told that having a local is painless and all you feel is a couple of stings from the needles prior to the procedure. All the best.
