ultrasound with water vrs transvaginal - Cancer: Cervical & Ovarian Message Board

Not sure where to post this. CT scan showed possible cyst on ovary and gyno wants it checked. Because I have a very small bladder and also some urinary incontinence plus chronic bronchitis she ordered the transvaginal. when I went to make appt they said they would have to talk to technician. they came back and said I had to try the one where you drink all the water first. I told them I could not do that and they said I had to try but the appt gal said she was scheduling the transvaginal but I still should try. I am rather miffed that they are overiding my Drs. request. I know I can't hold(much less drink) 32 ounces of water for probably over an hour till they get to me. I would flood the waiting room or my car. I am not even sure if it would be safe for me to do this. Has this happened to any of you. I understand the TV is a better and more complete test anyway. Advice, please as I plan to go in and talk to someone in charge. Thanks

I would definitely talk to the doctor. The first ultrasound I had for a ruptured ovarian cyst was with the water. It was miserable....especially since the appointments never seem to be on time. I've had 4 transvaginal ultrasounds in the past 5 months for ovarian cysts and fibroids and each time the tech wanted my bladder EMPTY! They got great pictures without the water.

I agree. I would let the doctor know. They have no business telling you to drink the water when your doctor has ordered otherwise.

I have a small bladder too, or for whatever reason can't hold much either. When I have had to have U/S I drink nowhere near the 32 oz within an hour. I drink about two glasses of it and I make sure its cold. It seems to go through you a lot faster if its tap water. Even with the two glasses they have been able to get a good U/S on me. I just don't tell them it wasn't 32 oz.

Thanks, I think I will go over to hospital Monday and have a little chat with them. Someone said today maybe it was because Medicare required that be tried first. If you have to have an empty bladder for the one and they want me to come in with a full bladder, have no idea how that is going to work. The fact that they are usually running late is not a help. I sat next to woman once in waiting room and they were like 45 late and she was in pain. After i talk to them if I get nowhere I will drop a note off at my Dr. I am going to take the report from my urologist to the hospital outpatient place
