Why won't it go away??

I have been dealing with my pap's coming back Low grade Dyplasia since 2003. When they do my copo, it comes back normal.

Over this pass summer I finally decided to get the cryosurgery treatment and when I did another pap test the beg. of Oct... I found out my pap came back mild again. So I have to do another copo (my 4th one) on Friday.

I just don't get it... I'm glad it has not progressed but I've been dealing with this for THREE years now. I don't want them cutting my cervix to get rid of it because I'm scared I may not be able to have kids. It's too the point where I want to just tell my boyfriend "Let's have a kid" so I won't have to worry about what the doctor does to my cervix anymore.

Has anyone been in this situation??

WOW!!! I have the exact issue,,abnormal paps since oct 2003, ALWAYS mild ,,several treatments,,abnormaly mild again,, biopsies always good,,finally I went to a cancer specialist for a second opinion and he said cases like ours is just persistent but because its mild dont worry just followup it should never progress any further,,he beleives in time it will regress just taking longer,,,BUT follow up regardless...hes an oncologist he told me he's 99.9 %sure that I have nothing to worry about..do u smoke thats another reason it may take longer to regress otherwise its just like that..but I have been on the boards for a while and I never saw a message similar to mine until urs...I had my pap done yeaterday after 3 months I get the results in 10 days...hang in there follow up im sure everything will be ok...think positive...bye now

Oh thank you so much gogo! I told myself that as long as my papís keep coming back mild.. I'm not doing anything other then the cyro treatment. Even though it didn't work the first time. But, I don't want my cervix to become scared as a result of too many cryosurgeries...

I don't smoke, but being that I work in the city I'm always around it. I try not to inhale it and also my boyfriend smokes.. Not cigs or cigars.. But I'm wondering if that will also affect my condition as well.

I'm glad I'm not alone! I guess I'll have to suck it up during my procedure (I hate doing the colops) and pray and hope all goes well with a negative result again.

I pray yours comes out if not normal but stays mild.

Re: Why won't it go away??

I've been dealing with the same thing as you two!!!! I was beginning to think that I was the only person that was continuing to have mild abnormalities!

I was first diagnosed with HPV 15 years ago and had low grade abnormalities that persisted for about 4 years despite treatment (cryo)...then it regressed and I had normal paps for 8 years! Then after my second child was born I began getting ASCUS paps again...with a normal thrown in here and there and two LGSILs too! I've had 3 colpos in the past 3 years...one showed chronic cervicitis and the other two showed HPV changes with CIN1. I had one round of cryo 8 months ago and had an ASCUS after and most recently a LGSIL....I am now scheduled for another colpo in a couple of weeks.

My dr. also told me that since my cellular changes have stayed mild for so long that they are most likely not going to get worse (I have a hard time believing him of course...because I prefer to use my oh so fun catastrophic thinking - lol)......He did tell me that since I am getting so increasingly anxious over this that if my colpo does reveal CIN1 again..(and of course if it reveals worse) that he would be willing to do the Leep for me (which scares the heck out of me!!!!)...but I want this done with.

I've been considering getting an appt. with a gyn onc myself. I may just mention it to my gyn at my colpo appt and see what he says. The stress of this is wearing me down which in turn is wearing down my immune system I'm sure.

I have tested positive for the high risk strains....have you guys also???

It does feel good to know that I am not alone with this persistent crap though. I hope we all can start to get normal pap readings soon!!!!!

Re: Why won't it go away??

OOh...I forgot to add......

I hope I didn't scare you two by saying that I had a reoccurence many years later........I KNOW I had the reoccurence because I was going through an EXTREMELY stressful time (I had PPD after my second baby was born)....it's well-known that stress is a bad thing for this condition!!!!!! Most people won't EVER have a recurrence after their paps normalize!!!!

Re: Why won't it go away??

I was pregnant with my second whenI was diagnosed with a carcinoma in situ on my cervix. I had the baby early adn he passed.. I then had a LEEP and etc. Dont worry about not having kids.. Ive had another after the leep and am 38 weeks pregnant now. I have not needed a cerclage during the pregnancies either and I only have 1/2 of a cervix! And if you do need a cerclage they arent bad at all, I know several women whove had this and its not the big deal it seems to be.
My cancers seem to be estrogen dependant and fire up when Im pregnant. After the LEEP I have been cancer free since 1995.

So in my opinion Id say get it done, there is no problem with pregnancies that cant be handled just fine under a Dr's care, and hope this gives you some peace of mind.

Re: Why won't it go away??

MMParks, why do you only have 1/2 of a cervix? I am just curious since you mentioned you have had a LEEP for CIS. Did you have more than one procedure, or was your affected area so big they had to take so much? I've had two LEEP's and Dr. says he won't bother with another, I'll go straight to cold knife cone. He says that after 2 LEEP's, I still have about 75% of my cervix left. Just curious about your situation though, thanks!

Carcinoma in situ and they went deep.. I had a tumor on the outside of the uterus that was malignant and was deemed to be estrogen dependant and I was pregnant when the cis was found was found.. so no chances were taken with it. He drew me a pic of what he did and it looks like some of the top and most of the side has been taken off. The cone wasnt right for me because of the position of the CIS and size. I had ONE leep.. and he went deep enough that Ive had clean paps since 1995... so maybe going deep isnt such a bad thing!

In any case it hasnt interfered with my getting pregnant or carrying the children full term.

Re: Why won't it go away??

Just wanted to pop in and say that having a hysterectomy does not automatically mean you will deal with early menopause. There is usually the option left open to keep your ovaries (I kept mine) I think even with higher stages (like 1b1 or 1b2) because there really is no connection between cervical cancer and ovarian cancer.

Re: Why won't it go away??

NOT all cervical cancers are from HPV.. mine was not and I was NEVER positive for HPV.
Many times it is an estrogen dependant cancer adn not associated with ANY std. There is also a higher incident of this type of cancer in african americans, Native americans, and hispanics.. Im of native american decent and have other things associated with being of that race as does my daughter.

You can opt to have a hysterectomy if you are really fed up, but even then, you will deal with early menopause. So, I guess you just have to decide which would be worse...
No, I'm only 25 and would like to have at least three kids if God is willing. I am thankful that it's only Mild Dyplasia, but to be dealing with for three years is taking a toll on me. Worrying about my pap's every time is not fun for me.

Yes I did test positive for the HPV virus, so the virus will always be present which means I HAVE to make sure I'm up on my Papís. But when I hear stories of woman, who had procedures with health kids... And the dyplasia hasn't come back for years... Makes me forgot about the stress of the diseases. I want to be in that boat!

I never even heard of HPV in school.. So all of this really makes me upset even more. If Iíve known that 80% of the population would have this silent killer disease, I would have waited until I met my current. Not to say he wouldnít have given it to me eitherÖ

Thanks guys for all the encouragements.

Re: Why won't it go away??

Don't get down and frustrated Coccoeyes .....like I said, I've been dealing with the mild dysplasia for the past 3 years now too........and it seems to be staying mild (going for a colpo next week to check (yet again!)).........and I also did have this same problem when I was younger.....BUT....I KNOW deep down that my recurrence was from STRESS!!!!!! So try your hardest to divert your attentions and be good to your body. Don't think twice about the kids thing...I've got two healthy, beautiful girls! Just continue to be pro-active and stay on top of this as you are doing. Did you know that overseas they NEVER treat mild dysplasia....they just continue to monitor it indefinitely. Unfortunately it has become increasingly common but they are realizing that MOST mild dysplasias do go away on their own...even if some take a bit longer than others.

Stay strong and stay well!!!!!! You are not alone in this frustrating cycle.

Thank you so much mymollybt1!!! I would like for us to keep in touch with your stories. You and others have given me so much hope to fight this thing. And I do agree with your statement with STRESS!! Which I've been under latley. Good luck on your copo!

I have readed before that a man that smokes his sperm will have toxins that can make dysplasia worse. I don't know what thruth there is to it but I'm glad my bf doesn't smoke for that reason.

You will be fine cocco!

Me either I've asked my gyn two years ago and she said it won't affect it if your boyfriend smokes... She even gave me a weird half laugh at my question.

Well, my boyfriend and I have had unprotected sex during the beg. of our relationship for almost a year and it never progressed.
