Afraid it ovarian cancer

I have to go to the doctor...I know that, but am hoping to put it off until after Christmas. I have not been checked in so many years..it is shameful! I have been getting a vague pain/ache in the left side of my abdomen. It is usually low down but sometimes slightly higher. It is not always there and is more of an ache than a pain, tho I do get an odd twinge from time to time, if I make a wrong movement, as if something is sore in there. Sometimes I get a dull ache in the low centre of my tummy. None of it is there all the time but it bothers me. I have no other problems really except I get GERD attacks from time to time but have had that for years and just drink something hot to make it go away.

As I have convinced myself that I have ovarian cancer ( I am over 60 so it is unlikely to be a cyst) I wondered if anyone had any ideas as to other possibilities.

Re: Afraid it ovarian cancer

Hi PeaceCircle,

I too fear Ovarian Cancer. I am 55. You do need to go to your gynocologist. You need your whole female workup. I am trying to wait until January to spend anymore Money/Insurance. Then I will go back to my gyno. But, I have been a couple of times this last year. And more before that.

I like you have the left lower abdominal pain. I mostly have it really low and on both sides, but mostly on the left. And the twinges also, on the left but a little higher up.
I have been checked out by my gastroenterologist this year also. The bowels and the ovaries are in close proximity to each other. So it could be one or the other. I guess, it could be a combination of the two? Who knows?!

If your gyno does not find or suspect anything when you go see him/her, ask for a vaginal ultrasound. That helps see if it is just a plain ovarian cyst. I have heard that sometimes they can be bad or ok. And they also can bust (the cysts not the ovaries). I have had several vaginal ultrasounds and they do not hurt a bit, if the technition know what she is doing!

Come back and talk more and let us know what kind of answers you get!

Re: Afraid it ovarian cancer

My gyn does ultrasounds routinely at every visit..totally painless and very informative!
I too have pain on my lower right side...went to Gyn last month and he ordered CA125 test..It came back positive..with a low number..but positive nonetheless..so am scheduled for LAVH next month..scared to death of Ovarian cancer...just want it over with..
Any info will be helpful..
Does anyone know if a positive CA125 is common?

Re: Afraid it ovarian cancer

Hi Grumpy5,

I have heard that CA-125 tests all not all that accurate of a test for ovarian cancer. I have read that even when they are low, that you can still HAVE ovarian cancer and even when they are high, you can still NOT have ovarian cancer. They are just used as one of many tools for making a diagnosis. So, do not worry too much, until you get further test results on other tests!

I had a CA-125 test last year and it was low, as in negative! But, I still feel like I may have ovarian cancer or some other lower abdominal growth or problem.

Do you ever have lots of gas? I do. That is one of the symptoms of ovarian cancer. And the trouble was, the last vaginal ultrasound I had done, about 2 mo. ago, did not show my ovaries, because my bowels were full of gas!!! So, I will probably have another one done after the first of the year. Just need to take gas X or have a mostly empty bowel?!

What is a LAVH? And if you care to answer, how old are you?

Take care and try not to worry too much. Ya right?!

Re: Afraid it ovarian cancer

Please don't get too worried. The CA125 works for some women as a marker and others, not. It can change and flucuate with changes in health..infections, etc. It does not mean anything at this point, but you do want a doctor to take all of this seriously. Too often women are just blown off and told it's hormones..or it's because you don't have hormones or what ever, but it's best to make sure everything gets checked.

Do you remember what the numbers were? Also.. gas.. now that can be 100 different things. Often with Ovarian cancer, you will get bloated due to fluid build up. You would know if you had that. I'm sure you will feel much much better once everything is all checked and you are good to go!
