Daughter, pregnant and now with ovarian cancer

I just was looking for the questions I 'should' ask at my daughters appt next week - what do I want to know? She is 22, 12 weeks pregnant with her first and the doctors thought she had a really large cyst until last week, when the last ultrasound told them something different. There was additional bloodwork done, and surgery to remove the ovary is now being pushed up sooner - the doctors had wanted to wait until week 16 when they thought they were dealing with a cyst but that no longer seems an option. They are using the word cancer with certainty (although I know that there HAVE been surprises when the ovary is actually taken out). We see the 'team' next week and I have no clue what to ask here - does anyone have any experience with this and what 'buzz words' should I be listening for and what should I be asking about? thank you so much, Maggie in Vermont

Re: Daughter, pregnant and now with ovarian cancer

How awful for you... You must be having a stressful time at the moment.
I had ovarian cysts a couple of years ago which were picked up on a scan. The looked suspicious so i had the CA 125 which came out as really high. But.... as far as i know they can not confirm cancer until they have acctually operated. I had my operation and as soon as i awoke the surgon came and told me I did not have cancer. I acctually have severe endometriosis.
So having a large cyst (mine was semi solid) and a very high Ca125 test does not meen you will definatly have bad news. The Ca 125 can apparently get very high in people with endo.
I convinced myself it was cancer and thought I would not be here to see my children grow up and my specialist said it may be cancer... but it wasnt.

Good luck to you and your family and Stay strong x

Re: Daughter, pregnant and now with ovarian cancer

Hi Maggie. I would want to know why the rush to surgery? Is it because of the pregnancy? Every case is different of course and only your doctor can answer that. Average wait times for this surgery here is 5 weeks, mine will be 7 weeks after the ultra sound. Other things to ask about are current meds, what to continue or stop. Details of the operation and pain control methods, convelescance after. Ask for copies of all test results and pathology reports. Hope that gives you some idea of what to find out. I am so sorry for your family's predicament, and hope for the best possible outcome. Marise.

Hi Maggie,
I assume that by now the surgery is over. I hope it went well. Please let me know what was found out. I may be of some help from now on having gone thru that myself. Wishing you speedy recovery, Imoan
