How were you diagnosed with ovarian cancer? Enlarged rt ovary
I am 29, recently post op from colon cancer surgery. I had my total large intestine removed, I don't have a bag, and I also had my appendix removed. Since before surgery, 3/27, I had this pain on the right lower side and I attributed it to the cancer, because my cancer was on the right side cecum. However, it's gotten worse after surgery, so then I thought it was fluid, a CT on 4/12 showed I had some fluid in the pelvis. My surgeon seemed to think everything was fine with me, but I was persistant and contacted my oncologist who ordered a pelvic sono.
My right ovary is almost 3 x the size it should be. I have chronic pain and discomfort on the right side and it feels full and hurts more when I sit down. All I know now is the size difference, when the sonographer left the room, I looked on the machine, I used to work in xray so I knew what I was looking at and the measurements and all. I am wondering now if this can be cancer. They think I have a genetic mutation called Heritary Nonpolypous Colorectal Cancer-HNPCC, there are two variations of this gene, the 1 is just in the colon and reoccurance is high in the colon, which is why I had the entire thing removed, the other is 2-which is where it can spread to your ovaries and uterus. I am now freaking out. Hopefully I will have some results soon, the sonographer stated she would have them call report this afternoon because she wanted my doctor to have my results. I called my doc's office to let them know and hopefully they will be calling me today if not early tomorrow.
I post requently on the colon cancer board, but I was just curious, how was your ovarian cancer diagnosed? What was your symptoms, etc?
Re: How were you diagnosed with ovarian cancer? Enlarged rt ovary
I hope you get a call soon from your doctor and get some answers. I am curious to hear what may be causing the enlarged ovary - I had an exam at the end of March where my right ovary was enlarged, i am still waiting for an ultrasound (next Wednesday). I was told it could be enlarged due to ovulation cysts, however the discomfort I've been experiencing is much different from my usual cycle pains. I'm sorry I can't answer your question regarding ovarian cancer diagnosis - I think the only way to truly diagnose is through biopsy/surgery. A ca125 can give hints, however it is not really reliable to determine cancer as many factors can influence the result.
I hope this turns out to be nothing too serious, you have been through so much already.

Hi Christy217
Ovarian cancer can only be diagnosed through a biopsy. This should be done by a gyn/oncologist not a general gynaecologist. My symptoms were frequent urination, swollen abdomen, backache. Im sorry you are going through all this worry but it seems as if you have a good medical team looking after you. Good luck.
Re: How were you diagnosed with ovarian cancer? Enlarged rt ovary
I am a little concerned. I got a call back from my doctor, it's a cyst, or so the report states this may be an ovarian cyst, but then it goes on to say a large ovarian cyst in the right adnexa. I talked to my regular gyno and she wants to wait 6 weeks to see if it is still there, these things usually have a way of working them selves out she said, but my concern is the chronic pain and the feeling of squeezing over my bladder and the fact that what if this isn't just a cyst? What if it is cancerous. My colon cancer was only 3 cm and it went through all four layers of my colon, what if that started on the outside and came through the inside and what if it is actually cancer on my ovary and that's where all this started. I know this is a rant, but I am freaking out here, got any suggestions? I do have some back pain lately and bloating and abd pain and nausea but I attributed that to all of my recent collectomy.

Re: How were you diagnosed with ovarian cancer? Enlarged rt ovary
Hi Christy,
I do not have ovarian cancer, but have had cysts on my ovaries. they mainly went away after about 6 mo. But, I am older than you and if I were in your position, with a history of cancer, I would keep going to gynocologist specialists and/or some other kind of cancer specialist. In my opinion, you need either, a LAP so, they can see your ovaries, and biopsy them, or some other kind of operation, so that your female parts can be checked out totally. I would not take any chances if I were you. No wait and see. Yours is not a regular case.
But, you do need to make for sure you are healed from your first operation, before they do any other operations on you.
Good luck and do not give up, you will find the correct doctor.
Re: How were you diagnosed with ovarian cancer? Enlarged rt ovary
Hi Christy,
Sorry to hear you have had such a hard journey. My ovarian cancer was diagnosed, tentatively, by ultrasound and eventually confirmed by the lab when they operated. My ultrasound results said "suspicious for carcinoma" and nothing about cysts. After my operation I had similar symptoms of bloating and pain. Best wishes for a better outcome.
Marise.

Hi Christy
Have you voiced your concerns to your gyne? I would ask directly how does she/he know its not going to be malignant With your past cancer history im sure he/she would understand your dilemma. Have you had a CA125 blood test?
Re: How were you diagnosed with ovarian cancer? Enlarged rt ovary
By accident. I was having surgery for a ovarian cyst. When the doctor drained the cyst she found 6 tumors winking back at her. Thank God she had an oncologist on standbye just in case.
