I received my first atypical pap smear in late JAN 2007 with an ASCUS rating. They also tested for high risk HPV and I tested positive. Needless to say, I was FREAKING out since I had never even heard of HPV. I've been really stressed out all month because of this diagnosis and doing a lot of research on the internet to educate myself. I am currently taking a multivitamin (prenatal), Vitamin C, Vitamin E, and Indole 3 Carbinol (200mg).
I went in for my colposcopy this morning. My gyn told me that my PAP from JAN was NOT abnormal. She said that atypical is very different from 'Abnormal' and that atypical can be caused by numerous factors (stress, having sex before appt, infection). Because I tested positive for HPV, they wanted to make sure there was no dysplasia and that's why I had to have a colposcopy. She said that 85% of the time, she ends up not seeing any abnormal cells with ASCUS. She also did an ECC, but I won't get the results for another week. Anyways, just wanted to let everyone know that my gyn did NOT see anything turn white during the colposcopy. I am so happy right now. The colpscopy did NOT hurt at all.. very similar to a PAP. I still need to get the ECC results and will have a follow up PAP/HPV test in 6 months.
Sorry this is so long. I just wanted to let everyone know that this IS very common. It's normal to freak out/stress/cry... I DID! My gyn says she does 6-7 colposcopies a day. She's only had 2 patients in the past 10 years actually get cervical cancer. One of these ladies had not gotten a pap in over 20 years. She also thinks that in the future, they will get rid of PAPs alltogether and only test for HPV.
Hope this helps someone. Please stay positive
