Repeated ASCUS results

I've had 5 years worth of ASCUS results with no HPV and I'm starting to get really put out. The first time they did a biopsy and it was normal. Then they repeated my PAP every 6 months for two years. Still never a good result. Then they moved back to once a year and just tell me they don't know why it's always suspect. I'm to the point of not knowing why I even bother to get this test anymore. They always check for HPV and it is negative. I've only had one partner my whole life and I'm also his only partner. Should I push for more treatment of just let it go?

Thanks

Re: Repeated ASCUS results

Have you been seeing the same doctor? Maybe get a second opinion?

Exclamation Re: Repeated ASCUS results

I am in the same boat. I got my first in May of 2006 at my 6 week postpartum checkup after having m daughter. I was positive, but HPV negative. I went back in three months, then 3 months after that. They did a biopsy, finally. Then I had another and it was still the same. Now, this year I moved across the country and have new doctors and I still have the same results, positive for abnormal cells, low grade, but negative for HPV. I also don't get a lot of answers from any of the doctors I saw because they really don't have answers. Basically what I have been told is that it is possible there may be an infection and they can treat that if you would like or you just keep going and wait for the cells to grow into something more serious or wait for it to go away, thats it.

Re: Repeated ASCUS results

Thanks that is what I keep getting. "Just wait and see if it gets worse over time." I know you would also rather not spend each year wondering if it is going to be worse either.

Re: Repeated ASCUS results

Hi,

I know it rather sucks to have to go through repeated pap smears and biopsies year after year, but you should be glad at least that there is no dysplasia present. I also had ASCUS paps for 3 years and the biopsies came back benign, until last June when I had CIN I-II. I'm still waiting to see if it's cleared up because if not, I will have to get the LEEP next month.

So while I know going in for constant check ups is no fun, it is a good thing that you are keeping an eye on your health and making sure your ASCUS results never indicate dysplasia. It is strange, however, that you are HPV negative, but I have heard some cases where women test negative for HPV but still develop dysplasia -- someone here once said that could be that the test didn't pick up which HPV strain you had.

In any case, HPV positive or negative, your abnormal paps are saying that there is something not quite right down below (sorry haha) but the good news is that your biopsies are benign. What, exactly, were the biopsy results? Is it inflammation? It'd be good to find out what the results are so you can get a better understanding of what's going on with your body.

Re: Repeated ASCUS results

I think it is still common to be negative and get these abnormal results. I think what is frusterating is that after having normal, you are all of the sudden not and it would be nice to clear up the problem and go back to the way it was before. I just expect my usual results and if it clears, great and if it progresses then I will deal with it when that time comes.

Re: Repeated ASCUS results

I went for a second opinion and the new Dr was very nice. He said after 4 years another Colscopy should be done and did one that day. He saw some abnormal area and took a biopsy which I'll get back in a few days. He may also do Cryo anyway because of the persistancy of the problem. I feel so much better now that something is being done.

Re: Repeated ASCUS results

Please let us know because I get the same results as you, but I have only benn getting them for two years instead of five like you. Someone mentioned that maybe the HPV strain isn't being pickec up? Is that possible?
Has that happened to someone here before?

Re: Repeated ASCUS results

Update: Biopsy was normal but because this has gone on so long we did the Cryo to try and clear it up. Was not painful at all and very fast. I go back in a month to check the healing and then in March for a repeat PAP. I feel so much better that someone is at least trying to clear this up instead of just telling me to forget about it.
