Cervical Cancer

Hi, I just recently had the cone biopsy done 2/28 - i had a abnormal pap, then the coloscopy, - i guess my question is has anyone just the cone done and not went on with the hysterectomy? My OBGYN says at my age 38 and since i dont want anymore children that that would be the best thing to do to guarantee the cancer will not come back? Right now I am waiting on the results to see if i will need a radical, or vaginal hysterectomy... what constitutes whether you should or should not go on with the hysterectomy? Any thoughts from anyone - scared and confused...thank you

Re: Cervical Cancer

the most common way now to treat cervical cancer is through radiation and chemo. have you seen an oncologist or just your gyne? a gyne is probably not up on most recent data. the thing is a hysto just cuts out the problem and doesn't treat any cancer cells that might be floating around...hope that makes sense.

Re: Cervical Cancer

Hi steph95. I'm in a similar position insofar as treatment. I had a pap that came back as HSIL.
Another biopsy at colposcopy also came back as HSIL. So doc (Onc/Gyn), scheduled me for loop, as it 'appeared' there was only a small area on the cervix. During the loop, he took another biopsy ( much larger), and I was advised to refrain from the 'usual' activities for 3 weeks. This was followed by a phone call a week later that this had also came back as HSIL with unclear margins, so I'm scheduled for a Cone biopsy on the 6th (Thursday). Now what he informed me, when I went for a consult after the loop (to sign surgery paperwork), was that because the abnormal cells were so high up, he was not able to determine if it was cancer. That was the purpose of doing the cone, to determine treatment. What he did say, was that at some stage I may end up having a hysterectomy, but I gathered he wasn't rushing at doing a hysterectomy. I kinda figured the cone 'might' just fix the problem, if it remains HSIL. I'm not sure really
Anyhow the point of my post, is to say I'll get back post cone and biopsy results and compare outcome/treatment plan, if it helps any.
Good Luck.

Rotty, I've just read your other post, and absolute Kudos to you. You are truely an abolute inspiration.
I truely hope things go well for you. Big Karma coming at ya

Re: Cervical Cancer

I had severe dysplasia and it was higher up in the cervix so I had to do a cone biopsy. I was told I might have to have a hysterectomy or radical hysterectomy as well. I'm 35, married a year ago, with no kids. I had to wait two weeks for results but turned out I had several severe spots but the margins were clear. I mentioned I was unsure on wanting kids so the doctor said we wouldn't do hysterectomy but just continue to watch. If you don't want any more kids, and in order to not have to worry as much - you could go ahead and do a hysterectomy. Best thing to do is research yourself. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem like there are alot of options to choose from at this time. Good luck and God bless and hope your results come back with great results!

Re: Cervical Cancer

Hi...I just wanted to let you know that I was diagnosed with AIS in August 07. I had normal paps my whole life until 2 years ago when I was diagnosed with HPV type 18 (apparently one of the higher risk strands) but my paps continued to be normal. Then all of a sudden my pap came back ASCUS, had a colpo and biopsy and turned out I had AIS. My first doctor mentioned hysterectomy, but I went for a second opinion and was told to go for a cone biopsy. Unfortunately, the 1st cone came back with unclear margins and my doc suggested a 2nd cone. The 2nd cone came back with clear margins and I am happy to report that I just had my first 3 month follow up pap and everything came back normal. I am 27 years old with no children so a hysterectomy was an absolute last resort for me. My doctors worked with me and while they can't rule out a hysterectomy in the future (I am told that AIS can "jump" to other areas) for now I am not going down that road.

I just wanted to share my story because I had two cones and so far no hysterectomy. However, if fertility were not an issue, I would have gotten the hysterectomy...I would not want to worry about anything coming back or spreading to other areas. My thoughts and prayers are with you and I hope that everything goes ok.

Hello...I too am going through a similar situation... I had an abnormal pap 5 months ago...I had CINIII, Severe dysplasia...etc. I went through colposcopy...Then after those results came back abnl, I had a cone biopsy, D&C, and laproscopic endoscopy ?something or other? The specialist thought that would be all I needed to fix my problems...At my follow-up Pap 3/8/08 my results were even worse! High grade squamous intraepithelial lesion encompassing moderate and sever dysplasia, carcinoma in situ (Cin II and III) Glandular cell abnormality, atypical endocervical cells, cannot exclude adenocarcinoma in situ...YIKES!!! Two weeks ago I again went under cold knife conization of the cervix (or cone biopsy) colposcopy of cervix and upper vagina, vaginal biopsies and D&C...All to rule out invasive cancer....Scary stuff!!! It turned out benign with low grade changes! Yeah! BUT she is making me have a hysterectomy anyway. As fast as my results changed in 5 months...I want it! I'm 39 years old and am fortunate to have my family! 3 beautiful children...So my decision to have the LAVS/BSO (laporascopic assisted vaginal hysterectomy/Bilateral salpingo oopherectomy)was easier... I have to let my cervix heal for 6 weeks (from my cone biopsy 2 weeks ago today) so that they can have better diagnostics once everything is removed. My hysterectomy is 4/16/08 I'm nervous but I don't want to have to worry about another abnl pap the next time around...and the next. All this junk in my pap would eventually turn to cancer...Something I'm not willing to risk waiting around for... I wish now that we would've just done it the first time around...But insurance companies and the doctors do everything so much more conservatively these days...Just going through all of this and worrying for those few weeks about possibly having invasive cancer gave me a whole new outlook on how precious life is! I nervous as ever about my hysterectomy...but after reading some of these boards...it eased my mind thanks all! Good luck on whatever you decide...Make sure to do your follow up paps...If all is good...you maybe wont need anything else...That would be wonderful! But personally...Why not have it now and not have to worry...Look what happened to me in only 5 months... Good luck! Let's keep in touch!
