HPV can cause pre-cancerous changes to the cervical and vaginal lining cells. Very often, the body's immune system will fight off the virus and the cells will return to normal. Less frequently, the changes may be of a higher grade, which may need to be treated. If left untreated, the cells may become cancerous in 5 to 10 years. Luckily, cervical cancer is one of the most treatable cancers, so there is a very low mortality rate now from it if proper screening and treatment are provided.
