Unhappy Abnormal cells?

Hey everyone! I'm kinda confused on what abnormal pap smears are? I have high risk hpv with an abnormal pap, I know it means that my cells are changing, but what are they changing to? Is it pre-cancer or something? Because I know that high risk hpv can cause cancer so I'm just confused on the abnormal part, can anyone help me understand... I would really appreciate it, Thanks

Re: Abnormal cells?

Hi,

I'm sorry no one answered your question sooner.

HPV can cause pre-cancerous changes to the cervical and vaginal lining cells. Very often, the body's immune system will fight off the virus and the cells will return to normal. Less frequently, the changes may be of a higher grade, which may need to be treated. If left untreated, the cells may become cancerous in 5 to 10 years. Luckily, cervical cancer is one of the most treatable cancers, so there is a very low mortality rate now from it if proper screening and treatment are provided.

Lisa
