I just received a call from my physician that my pap smear came back with "probable HSIL and dsyplasia. She also told me that I have a fungus and need to get an over-the-counter (monostat) to clear up the infection. I have had NO symptoms of an infection (no itching or discharge), but I did the monostate thing anyway.

She has referred me to an OB/Gyn for a colposcopy. My questions are:

1. Is my diagnosis a serious one?
2. Could the "infection" have caused the pap smear to come back positive?

I'm not sure what to think.

Hi,

HGSIL (also known as severe dysplasia) is a pre-cancerous condition. It is not cancer, but it does need to be treated to prevent it from possibly becoming cancer.

And yes, the infection could very well cause your Pap to be abnormal.

Just a little hint, during the colposcopy, if your doctor needs to do a biopsy, have him or her tell you right at the moment they take the biopsy and at that moment, cough. You won't feel a thing. (But warn the doctor ahead of time that you're going to do this.) Also, take some ibuprofen before you go.

Thank you for your kind words. Are you saying that the fungus could make the pap detect HSIL when it really isn't? Or should I pretty much face the fact that the result is HSIL regardless of the fungus?

Hi,

Fungal infections can cause abnormal Pap results. Plus, Pap tests aren't that accurate in diagnosing cell changes since they're only sampling a small amount of cells. Only a colposcopy and biopsy would show exactly what is going on.
