Red face Ovarian Cyst?

Hi -

I woke up last Thursday morning with pretty uncomfortable achiness on the left side of my pelvis - it was sore on Friday, and I called my gyno - she said it sounded most likely that I had an ovarian cyst (even though I'm on the pill?) and if it didn't get better to call this week - well, it's been very mildly achy this week, but when I woke up this morning I decided to call them back - they said if it's better than last Thursday it's probably nothing to worry about, but they "squeezed" me in this coming Wednesday so she could ultrasound it - does this sound like a routine ovarian cyst to anyone?

thanks!

Re: Ovarian Cyst?

Hi supermom,

It is difficult to know for sure if you have an ovarian cyst until they do the ultrasound. Pain down there could be from many things, including constipation, appendicitis, pelvic infection and of course, ovarian cysts. The ultrasound will definitely tell you if the pain caused by an ovarian cyst but you could also have simply had a normal functional cyst that ruptured and released fluid into your abdomen. While the fluid is being reabsorbed by your body, you would be achey and tender ... usually for up to a week. Do you know when within your cycle you started to experience the pain ? If it was about 2 weeks after the start of your last period then it occured during ovulation .. I realize that you are on the pill, but some women still ovulate while on the pill. This is because the estrogen content of our modern pills are quite low and they now know that women are still growing ovarian follicles which sometimes release an egg. Don't worry, your endometrial lining is so thin while on the pill (due to all of the progesterone) that there is no way you will become pregnant (the egg cannot embed itself in your lining in order to become fertilized).

I hope you find an answer to your problem. Come back and let us know how you are doing. All the best.

Re: Ovarian Cyst?

Hi estria!

Thanks for your reply - I think I messaged with you last winter! I was a totally wreck because I found out when I had an ultrasound to check for a possible fibroid that I had an ovarian cyst and I had made the mistake of spending way too much time on the internet and kept freaking out about cancer! It ended up dissolving, as I know now most of them do!

I don't have a concern about pregnancy, as my husband had a vasectomy years ago. The achiness is just so annoying! I'll let you all know after Wednesday's ultrasound how it turns out!

thanks again!
