Pap Result

I received a call from my doctor today that my pap came back as LSIL. I think I'm saying that right...maybe not.

Anyway, last year my results were HSIL and I had a colposcopy. The doctor that did the procedure felt like she didn't do it correctly and scheduled me to come back for another one, which I did not return.

They have never tested me for HPV, albeit I have had 3 abnormal paps.

Have an appointment in April for another colposcopy. So I guess I'm wondering how it went from HSIL to LSIL?

Re: Pap Result

Well, the pap isn't really that specific . . . it shows abnormal cells. Sometimes they look HSIL, and sometimes LSIL, but you really need to do a biopsy to determine for sure the amount of abnormality.

That being said, it's completely possible to go from HSIL to LSIL. Sometimes your body just heals itself!

Make sure you return for your appointment! Even if it is still HSIL, it's easily treated. Most LSIL goes away on it's own. If it's LSIL, you'll probably just be watched closely.

Re: Pap Result

Yep, to everything Lily said. Hopefully your body is healing the atypical cells (frequently occurs, especially in yournger (than 30) women.

Please go for the follow up colpo! The pap is only a screening tool, it isn't diagnostic. The colpo will give you and your doctor a much bette idea of what is going on with the cervix!

Re: Pap Result

Thanks for your replies. I do have a colposcopy scheduled for the end of April. Should I also ask for an HPV test as well? I've never had one.

I am 53 years of age, so not so sure how well my body will heal itself. LOL

The HPV test is a frequent discussion on this board, and I think we all pretty much agree: GET IT!

Doctors often say it's not necessary. But what's the negative in having more information?

Your doctor might tell you that because you have LSIL/HSIL they know you have it. While your body will probably never truely get rids of the HPV, it can go inactive. A positve HPV test means the virus is active, and you should be followed closely even if your paps are normal!

You should ask for/demand an HPV test at every future appointment!
