Help with Colposcopy report

Because of your ladies advice I requested a copy of my report. Please help me understand it.

3-26-09

Final Pathologic diagnosis
Cervical Biopsy from 6 o'clock
-squamous carcinoma in situ (CIN-3)

Random cervical biopsies
-Squamous carcinoma in situ (CIN-3)
-acute and chronic endocervicitis.

Endocervical curettings
-scant fragments of benign endocervical glandular epithelium
-nagative for dysplasia.

Comment
The Pap smear was reviewed and the number of atypical squamous cells is quite small. Diagnostic features of squamous carcinoma in situ were not present on the previous pap smear.

Diagnosis/Clinical impression:
ascus. hpv positive, no prior dysplasia history.

in December of 08 I was told I showed atypical cells on my pap smear. this colpo report was done on 3-26-09
When the doctor called with these colpo results she said I had high grade dysplasia. I would need to have a leep done.
What does this mean?

thanks for your time in advance

Re: Help with Colposcopy report

It sounds like you have carcinoma in situ. This is the highest level of precancerous squamous cells. You do not have atypical cells in the cervical canal (glandular cells). Your next step is to get a LEEP. Hopefully (and usually) the LEEP is diagnostic and treatment. Carcinoma in situ is often treated with a LEEP and only requires follow up visits every 6 months (or so) for several years.

I know this is scary. Have you scheduled your LEEP?

You are in my thoughts and prayers!

Re: Help with Colposcopy report

Hi Pickle eyes,

thanks for explaining the report to me. I do appreciate it. I do have a Leep scheduled however I tried to tell the lady that date is not good because I will have my period then.
She scheduled it for that date anyway saying that is the only appointment they had. I am going to call on monday and ask for a different time. I hate when they tell me that my doctor wants to do the leep.
They said that about the colpo to but I would not wait any longer and demanded a sooner appointment after it was canceled twice. once by me and another by her.
I am glad I didn't wait! I am scared to have the leep done.

Re: Help with Colposcopy report

Why can't I just have a hysterectomy? I am 43 and don't want kids in fact I had the essure done about 9 months ago. I think they should let us make the choice because it is our body

Re: Help with Colposcopy report

I think they have to do the next step in diagnosis (the LEEP or a CKC) before determining the hyst. They need to see the extent of the CIS. From the colpo/biopsy/ECC they (I think) only know that is what you have, they don't know the extent. The LEEP/CKC help determine depth/extent.

I highly suggest that after the LEEP that you get an appointment with a gyn/oncologist. They are experts in gyn cancers. I felt much more confident in my diagnosis and treatment plan after going to mine. She said the same thing the gyn had said, but I trusted and believed the gyn/onc. You can start looking for one now. Call and tell them your diagnosis so far and what is planned. Ask about what needs to happen to get in as a patient and how soon that can happen.

I suggest when you make the call(s) to have a written list of questions and leave room for answers. Have a different list for each doctor's office you call.

Let us know how things are going, ok?!
