Scared. Complex cyst and GI issues - anyone else?

Hi. I am 42 years old and was diagnosed 6 weeks ago with a 2.7 cm complex ovarian cyst. There was no blood flow, and no free fluid. I'd originally gone for the ultrasound b/c I'd been having intermittent lower left-sided pelvic pain. My OB/GYN told me that it is nothing to worry about, but that we would follow it to make sure it shrinks. I'll be going for a follow-up in two weeks.

Well I am a hypochondriac, and unfortunately, am worrying quite a bit. For the past week I've also been extra gassy, so I stupidly looked it up on the internet and saw that increased intestinal gas can be an early symptom of ovarian cancer. What I want to know is if anyone else has had extra gassiness with ovarian cysts. I'm trying to convince myself that the GI issues are from irritable bowel syndrome, which has maybe arisen due to my anxiety. I could use any comforting words right now. Thanks!

Re: Scared. Complex cyst and GI issues - anyone else?

Hi there --

First of all I'm going to say that unfortunately I know almost nothing about ovaries and cysts, so I can't be very helpful on that front.

HOWEVER, I can tell you a little about creating symptoms in your head! (And I'm not trying to say your symptoms aren't real!!) While I was awaiting surgery earlier this year and was not sure of the extent of my problem, I did a lot of reading online about symptoms, complications, et cetera....like most of us here do. Well, every time I read x, y and z, I would soon thereafter have a pain here, there and everywhere, and was sure I could feel my problem spreading. My surgery showed no more abnormal pathology, and I was just fine -- which proved that all my symptoms were in my head! Then after surgery, I would continually think hmmm, I think I'm having this side effect, that problem, et cetera....and after I'd go for a follow up and was told wow, you're healing great, things look good....well, you guessed, I'd feel fine The mind is a powerful thing, and this stuff is scary, and that can account for a lot of things! It's certainly possible, and probable, that your gassiness and GI issues are completely due to anxiety -- which is quite understandable!

Sorry I can't give better physical advice, but I hope some of this makes you feel a little better

Thank you for your reply Zoe. You're absolutely right. I'm probably creating some of my symptoms on my own. In fact, yesterday after I read about frequent urination being a symptom I suddenly had to pee every 10 minutes for the rest of the night! Of course I hadn't had that symptom until I read it. I know I'm nuts, but I also know I'm scared. Your post did make me smile though, so thank you! And I'm glad you're doing well!

Well I have been diagnosed with cysts on both ovaries, as well as the fibroids I already knew I had. I am to be rescanned to see if they have shrunk, indeed my pains have seemed to cease.

But I have had GI problems also, I did put them down to a reaccuring problem, but hten googled it and found out exactly what you did. Now I am wondering if all my GI problmes, have infact been ovarian. I have also missed three periods in 36 months.

I know EXACTLY how you feel as i am a cyberchrodriac too and when I read a symtom I do mysteriously seem to develop it soon after!!

Good luck with your next scan too!

Hi Curious --

Glad you are feeling a little better!! It really is amazing how we can imagine so many things. After my surgery, before I knew how many lymph nodes had been taking, I was laying on the couch looking at my legs thinking omg, they are swelling already, I am getting lymphedema, I knew this was going to happen....then I went to the doc for my post-op follow up and he told me they only took 11, and not the ones that could cause lymphedema. I checked out my legs again and suddenly they looked just fine. Like I said, I was totally nuts....

Re: Scared. Complex cyst and GI issues - anyone else?

Just wanted to update with my great news.

I went for my follow-up today and the cyst is gone! I was so sure that not only was it still there, but that it had grown b/c I'd still been having pain. So now I know that my intermittent pelvic pains, lower back pains, and gassiness have nothing to do with the cyst! I was really in shock when they told me that all I had in each ovary was a tiny follicle - i.e., an egg. I'm still in denial that this is over with.

What I found interesting was that the practice I went to scanned my kidneys at the same time. I was glad they did, b/c they also ruled out kidney issues as the cause of my lower back pain. Now I don't have to worry about that either.

Yay! I'm glad your ovaries are fine! I never replied to this thread, but wanted to add that several years ago I had a complex cyst and it resolved itself. I'm glad to know yours did, too!

I want to add that I struggle with constipation and I have had various left side pains, low back pains, etc because of that issue.

I hope you are feeling better!

Re: Scared. Complex cyst and GI issues - anyone else?

curiousmom22, being gassy can be part of having ovarian cyst. I have a 5.4cm complex ovarian cyst and I do have lots of gas, bloating and pain. They can go away on their own hence the repeated ultrasounds to check. My gyn has scheduled me for surgery because I have had severe pain for 5 months now and I've also had endo, so he will remove the cyst and clean up endo. My cyst might be and endometrioma he won't know until it's removed. If your cyst isn't getting any bigger it probably won't be cancer. I was told my the specialist that if it was cancer it would be getting bigger and even less likely if you don't have any free fluid in your pelvic area on the US

I know it's worriesome but don't read too much into things. Stress isn't good either.

Good Luck

Hi I am the same cysts on both ovaries, on my left one is 5 cm was 2 cm and another one on my left 4 cm. the one on my right is 3.5cm didn't have one 3 months ago, only 36 and have had a partial hysto 6 months ago, quite tired, very bloated and unable to open bowels. I have got more bloated since last scan a week ago, I am worried as I have ill health currently due to my diabetes and my readings in the morning for diabetes have been 24.3 mmol which is really high its supposed to be 6 mmol.
Can anyone help me and so glad to read I am not the only one.
