Cryotherapy and NuvaRing

I recently had a cryotherapy treatment for moderate dysplasia. I never mentioned I was using the NuvaRing, and the OB/GYN never said anything about it. Has anyone had this done and been told to take it out? Or is it okay to leave in? Thanks.

Re: Cryotherapy and NuvaRing

I wouldn't insert ANYTHING past the vaginal opening for a minimum of 8 weeks after any ablative therapy. Longer if you had excisional therapy. I strongly disagree with the crap advice doctors give about sex being okay 4 weeks after LEEP. (I know LEEP is not your question but just illustrating). I know so many women who have reopened healing wounds from having sex way too early. Also, insertion of devices such as tampons have been shown in at least one study to reduce viral clearance, so the same might apply to a device like NuvaRing especially one that contains hormones.

Re: Cryotherapy and NuvaRing

Actually, with my doctor's okay, I kept my NuvaRing in DURING both the LEEP and the CKC. And I just kept with them on my regular schedule. She said it was fine. Unlike a tampon which collects stuff, the NuvaRing doesn't really pose an infection risk.

The only problem I had was that I was still healing from my CKC when I re-inserted a new NuvaRing. I think I bumped something because I started bleeding a bit again, but it only lasted like an hour.

My gyno wasn't very cautious about anything . . . she only told me nothing in the vagina for 2 weeks after LEEP and 3 weeks after the CKC. I'm a pretty good healer, so I think those times were about what I needed. Actually I probably could have had sex right after the LEEP with no complications. She only removed about half the size of a dime.

Still, I never had cryotherapy, so I think you should call your doctor. I don't know if that would be different.

Re: Cryotherapy and NuvaRing

Lily, thanks for sharing your experience. Maybe those other women were slow healers, like me, and I also had an infection (and genital herpes which never helps anything). I know when I paged the obgyn who did my laser 2 weeks after my procedure (when I was bleeding pretty heavily) he was shocked, told me to go to the ER and reiterated that most women who have laser will spot or have light flow at most with healing at the 2-week mark as opposed to LEEP which takes much longer to heal. I cant imagine inserting anything after LEEP. Laser (done properly) is actually much more gentle, a slow "melting" instead of a quick swipe. Maybe 4 weeks will be ok for lostandbroken.
