WWYD if...

What would you do if...

...you had ASCUS and AGUS on a pap, you had a colposcopy with a cervical biopsy and an endmetrial biopsy (no ECC), and your pathology reports came back "clear" except for maybe mild displaysia? Would you worry that the OBGYN missed something more serious b/c she did not do the ECC?

I don't have my results yet, but the OBGYN thought this ^^^ would be the likely outcome to expect next week.

From everything I have read online, I don't know how I could be confident in a "good" report when AGUS is oftentimes indicative of something more serious and that "something more serious" can easily hide itself in nooks and crannies in the endocervical canal. Sigh.

Should my pap report have detailed whether my AGUS were of endometrial or endocervical origin? My OBGYN didn't say....just labled them AGC.

WWYD?

Thanks,
D

Re: WWYD if...

Hi, I'm glad you have asked this question. My hugest suggestion right now is to get a copy of the pathology report. It will tell you exactly what tissue was taken, what tests were run, the pathologist's impressions, AND what the pathologist recommends. If the report indicates more than what your doctor has said her impression is (or what she suspects it to be), then listen to her recommendations and consider getting a second opinion. Ask her specifically about the ECC and why it wasn't run.

When did you say you should get your results?

Re: WWYD if...

The pap test was 9.02.09. The colposcopy was 9.23.09. We live in a smaller city and they send all biopsies to a larger city. She said it would take a week and a half for results. So hopefully by 10.02.09...by the end of next week I'm hoping to receive her phone call with the findings.

I did ask her specifically why the ECC was not done (I mentioned what her response was on my other thread that I posted a couple days ago). I only spoke with her nurse and the nurse said something about the endometrial biopsy being sufficient to cover both the endocervical canal (obtaining a cell sample on the way out) as well as the edometrium/uterus. Which doesn't ring true from everything I have read.

Thanks for any advice...I've learned more here than from my OBGYN.

D

Re: WWYD if...

Hi there --

I agree that you should take a look at the pathology report for yourself to see exactly what it says, and exactly what was tested. I would also schedule an appointment with the gyn to discuss the results (once you already have the path report in your hand, so you've had a chance to read it and will be ready to fire questions at your doc!). I would then question her as to why she didn't do the ECC, and let her know you are uncomfortable with not having had one....and unless she could come up with one heck of an explanation as to why you shouldn't worry about the AGUS result on the pap, and a better explanation for not doing an ECC than the saying the endo biopsy would get something "on the way out" (which it CAN, but that doesn't necessarily mean it WILL), then I'd go get myself a second opinion with a new doc.

I went to an ob-gyn that I loved, and when she first told me about having hr hpv, she looked me in the eye and told me I had nothing to worry about. She did no further testing, no colpo, no biopsies, nothing; told me to come back in a year. I trusted her. She turned out to be totally wrong, and six months later I was diagnosed with early invasive cervical cancer. I'm not saying this to scare you! What happened to me was rare. BUT, I so wish I'd questioned her more, done more of my own research, and insisted on more testing....but I trusted her. Big mistake. I don't trust any doctor with anything, and if there is any type of suspicious result, I would have it checked out until I had a satisfactory answer that makes sense to ME -- not one that satisfies the doc or nurse or whoever.

Hope this helps, and hope I didn't scare you! I just feel it's much better to be safe than sorry. Please let us know what's going on after you get your path report.

Re: WWYD if...

No, your words don't scare me. I'm very much the type of person who wants to know and what's to tackle stuff head on and wants to be thorough. No use sticking one's head in the sand!

I read your story in the archives, Zoe. I am so sorry that you didn't receive better care. Thank you for using your personal experience to benefit others. I know I appreciate it.

And Pickle, I appreciate your feedback, too. I can tell from the archives that you are also so very willing to share your expriences from which we all benefit.

I wish I felt better physically after my procedures. I'm having cramps and flo equal to my period. Yuck.

Thanks again,
D
