Possible signs of infection are excessive bleeding (filling more than a pad per hour) - go to the ER.

Colored discharge - not the used coffee grind discharge, but something like green or yellow isn't normal.

FEVER! go to the ER

As Pickle Eyes said, soaking one pad or more in an hour, or bleeding that's more than a normal menstrual period or especially clotty
Fever of 101 or higher is definitely a concern.
I was told that a bad-smelling yellowish discharge would be a big indicator of infection
Pelvic pain
