Post internal hemorrhoids or colon polyps?

My stool has been flat for awhile now, much smaller in diameter than it used to be. I have chronic problems with what I think is a hemorrhoid on the outside, but have no bleeding that I can see. I plan on calling tomorrow to schedule a colonoscopy so that I can have some peace of mind, but just wondered what you thought might be causing the flat stool, and if anyone had experienced this. Thanks!

I've had intermitent flat stools for 18 months now.

They are different each day, changing from full rounded to 1" x 0,25" flattened (two flat sides). Sometimes both types (rounded and flat) are found in the same BM.

After a sigmoidoscopy nothing was found, so doc said that bowel spasms cause it.

Btw, if I take a fiber supplement (as Metamucil or Citrucel) stools are full rounded all the time.
