Exclamation Advice - Please read

I am a 26 year old male who has had digestive problems for some years now. I saw a doctor a few years back and told me I probably just had IBS and to watch my diet. Nothing seems to help. I usually have soft, loose, or watery stools and occasionaly find myself running to the bathroom right after a meal. When my stools are formed, they appear to be skinny and flat. I have had a dull ache in my lower left abdomen for approx 3 years and have had a dull ache in my rectum for appox 5 months. I finally saw a "good" doctor who sent me for a ct scan of my pelvis and abdomen. The scan revealed a "thickening in the wall of the sigmoid colon due to possible inflammation." I was referred to a gastrologist who scheduled me for a colonoscopy next week. He didn't seem all that concerned, but didn't offer many possibilities or explanations of what could be wrong with me. I'm paranoid and have managed to convince myself that it is colon cancer and am dreading the results. Are there any posibilities or explanations for these symptoms besides cancer? I am relatively good health otherwise and have never noticed blood in my stools. The fecal occult test was negative as well. No family history of cancer, however my father(56)had some pre-cancerous polyps removed 5 years ago during a colonoscopy. Any response would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

First of all, colon cancer at 26 would be EXTREMELY rare, unless you have one of two genetic conditions within your family (FAP and HNPCC) that you would have known about by now. Don't let your father's pre-cancerous polyps concern you too much, those are fairly common in a man his age and are quite treatable via removal. Your age and symptoms really aren't consistent with colon cancer - occult blood in the stool and fatigue (from anemia) are usually one of the first signs and symptoms, and peak incidence for colorectal cancer is 60 to 79 years, so you can almost rule it out on age alone.

What is more likely is the possibility of a few inflammatory and malabsorption disorders. Ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease are two possibilities in someone your age. These are chronic inflammatory diseases of the colon and/or small intestine and, although somewhat rare in the US, are often treated surgically and with corticosteroids (to control inflammation). Other possibilities are Celiac disease (an intolerance to gluten, a component of many foods such as wheat, oat, rye) and lactose intolerance (AKA disacharidase deficiency). The most common possibility is IBS, a general irritation of the colon. This is very common and is also managed medicinally.

Only your GI doc will be able to tell you for sure what the problem is after tests and the colonoscopy. I really wouldn't worry about colon cancer, you just don't fit the profile for it. Please come back and let us know how everything went for you.

I agree with Fudd 100%. I assist doing colonoscopies and my experience is that, although possible, colon CA at your age is not probable. You had a CT scan that was negative. Schedule the colonoscopy and have the test. Then you can be sure you are healthy. IBS really can put a damper on your life. The best thing you can do for yourself is increase fiber and see if that reduces your symptoms ( increasing fiber sounds so simple but can cause a dramatic improvement of IBS symptoms) Good luck and Don't worry!!!!

Update

I just got home from my colonoscopy and everything seems to be ok. The doctor didn't find any polyps or tumors, just inflammation in my rectum. He took a tissue biopsy to determine the cause, but didn't think it was anything too serious. He thinks it could be from some bacteria or infection. I just wanted to let everyone know who is scared of this test, that despite the unpleasant idea of this test, it is VERY easy. I'm sure you've heard this a 1,000 times, but the prep is really the worst part. I felt absolutely nothing and had/have no pain whatsoever. Please don't ignore symptoms, go get them checked.
