A General Question About Polyps & Colon Cancer - Cancer: Colon Message Board

Hi Everyone,

I've had many colonoscopies, I've seen numerous t.v commercials regarding colon cancer, and I've read numerous brochures on polyps, and colon cancer. It gives me hope when I hear and read that NO ONE HAS TO DIE FROM COLON CANCER, but at the same token, we hear how thousands of people die each year from this highly curable cancer when caught early. Why do you think that people wait to get screened until its too late, and how many agree that NO ONE HAS TO DIE FROM COLON CANCER?

Most colon cancers develop from adenomatous polyps. Screening is extremely important for detecting polyps before they become cancerous. It can also help find colorectal cancer in its early stages when you have a good chance for recovery.

Like many people, you may be embarrassed by the screening procedures, worried about discomfort or afraid of the results. Try not to let these concerns stand in your way. Most procedures are only moderately uncomfortable, and working with a doctor you like and trust should help ease your embarrassment.

The above, coupled with the bowel prep, probably explains why many people put this test off.

I agree with you. Also I think many docs need to rethink putting off young folks with rectal bleeding and other symptoms. On this board alone there are many of us under age 50, which is the recommended age for your first colonoscopy.

You must also remember to pay attention to your body and have any change in bowels habits looked at. I was diagonosed with rectal cancer 4 years after a clear scope. Fortunately I had some minor rectal bleeding which I had looked at. Scopes are supposed to be done every 10 years but don't rely totally on them if you have other symptons. Just my experience.

Most of the people who post regularly on the board already have colon or bowel cancer. Before I started posting I read many reader's messages to get a fell for the board, you should do the same.
