New here, question re:barium vs colonoscopy
Hi there. I am new here. Thank you for reading.
My mom was diagnosed with Bladder cancer last summer, superficial non invasive. She had been going to a different doctor for MONTHS and he kept telling her she had a bladder infection, but that is another story... Now her Bladder cancer has been taken care of with lots of treatments, and she goes every 3 months for checkups to stay on top of it.
About a month ago, mom said she started feeling a bit of a "pulling/pressure" in her lower abdomen (across from her hip bone, down from bellybutton and to the left). It would only happen at night and only once in a while. She has no other symptoms, like bleeding, or thin stools. Her mother was diagnosed with bowel cancer at the age of 87-89 years. My mom is 73 but more like 65...SO young, active and typically healthy. So finally this morning she went to the doctor. It would come and go, so she thought it was just gas, and she thought she didn't want to jump the gun and seem paranoid....
Her doctor told her he could either do a Barium or a colonoscopy. She said whatever he felt was the best. He chose Barium as it is the least invasive.
I would MUCH rather she have a colonoscopy because from what I have read they are much more accurate. I was wondering what you all thought of the two different procedures and what your experiences were/are?
Thank you very much for your time!
