First Colonoscopy - Very Nervous and Have Questions

I am scheduled to have my first colonoscopy in a week, and I'm really nervous about it. I am supposed to do the GoLytely prep, and I'm dreading it. What if I can't drink it all or get sick? Any tips on how to get through it?
Also, will I be able to go back to work after the procedure? My appointment is at 8:00am and I was thinking I'd tell my boss I'd be in to work at noon.

Re: First Colonoscopy - Very Nervous and Have Questions

First of all, no you PROBABLY won't be able to go back to work. This is only because you will have some form of conscious sedation and you really shouldn't drive afterwards. Many people wake right up while others are groggy for the day. You also need to be careful because they will tell you from a legal point of view NOT to drive or make important decisions for 24 hours. Should you drive within that time and get in an accident, your insurance will NOT cover you so please just take the day off.

The procedure itself is not that difficult. The prep is the worst part. Call the doctor's office back and tell them that you gag and vomit easily and see if they can either give you the: OsmoPrep pills to take (same effect in the bathroom though) or if you can do the Fleets Phospho Soda regimen. Both are MUCH easier on the stomach. If you do get sick on the GoLytely, they will usually tell you to do the Fleets anyway. All of them clean you out but many doctors have their own preference and it's a shame since it's YOU drinking the vile stuff and not them! You can search the internet for colonoscopy preps to find tips. Honestly, I would just call them back and ask for something different. It's worth a shot and see what they say. I greatly prefer the pills (there are about 32 I think) but the Fleets Phospho Soda aren't that bad. Two little 1.5 ounce bottles that you mix with any clear liquid. Remember that clear liquids also include things like kool aid (no red or purple though), jello (same color restrictions), 7 up , ginger ale, coke, coffee, gatorade, etc.

See what the docs office has to say. If they change the prep for you, it will truly alleviate a lot of your stress. Hope this helps.

Re: First Colonoscopy - Very Nervous and Have Questions

Miralax (no taste) mixed with lemonade or gatorade or whatever liquid you are allowed is probably the easiest. You don't have to use the same liquid for all of it. You could mix part of it with lemonade & some with tea or gatorade. That way you don't get tired of it.

Re: First Colonoscopy - Very Nervous and Have Questions

I have to do the GoLytely prep - that's what they use at the hospital where I'm having the colonoscopy. I bought some Crystal Light to mix with it, but I'm still really worried that it will taste awful and I won't be able to drink all of it. I'm also getting myself really scared after I read about possible complications during a colonoscopy (perforated colon, bleeding, infection, explosions !?!). I'm getting myself so worked up that I am thinking about cancelling the appointment altogether.

Re: First Colonoscopy - Very Nervous and Have Questions

I have the same fears about the C'scopy. Most people say they never finish all the prep. If you start feeling sick, stop & have a popsicle & start again when you think you can drink more. I tried the Halflytely lemon lime mixed with country time lemonade, Tang is the best if you're allowed orange. It didn't taste bad to me. The reason I suggested Miralax is because it is tasteless. It is called PEG 3350 in most of the preps. I've postponed 2 appt's already because of allergic reaction to the prep. The stress can make you sick. Let us know how this turns out.

Re: First Colonoscopy - Very Nervous and Have Questions

Hi "BCD" Thought I would offer my 2 cents worth here.

First - NO one was more scard of this procedure than I was and I put it off for 5+ years. I started noticing changes in my bowel habits and knew I had to get this done and off mind.

I had it done in mid April. This was my coktail.....

First my procedure was performed on a Wed so on Sat. I started eating very lightly. Eggs, applesauce, yogurt, etc. No fruit, veggies, nuts etc. Also, White bread and LOTS of water. On Tues. I started my prep @ 10:00 am with 4 Ducolax 5mg tablets which you purchase over the counter. At 1:00 pm I then mixed Miralax 233 gram container in 64 ozs. of lemon/lime Gatorade. The mixture is slightly thick but easy to drink and tasted quite good. My Dr. recommended drinking it SLOWLY. 8ozs. every 45 minutes. I just sipped it. It seems to take forever but I got it all down by 7:30 At about 4:30 (half way into drinking) I got a little nausea but once I used the bathroom, I was fine. The process was quite easy and I didn't have any cramping or discomfot at all. I was up a few times during the night and had to use the potty once at the surgical center in the morning.

I had conscious sedation with Diprofan and had an upper edoscopy exam as well as the colonoscopy. the worse part for me was the gas I experienced afterward. My tummy looked about 7 mos preg but the gas passes quickly within a few hrs. I was A-OK afterward, went home and took a nap for an hr and then ate up a storm with no problems. The good news is that I don't have to have this repeated for another 10 years.

I know how scary medical procedures can be and I really fretted over this BIG time. Just ask my friends and family. But I wouldn't hesitate one bit to have it repeated. Miralax is a newer prep. The volume of liquid is much less than the gallon, it is tasteless and it works. You pruchase everything over the counter in the drug store. When is your procedure scheduled? Do you have enough time to lighten up on your diet? I thank that made a huge difference as well. The protocol I used worked great....and remember I have a TERRIBLE phobia about vomiting, etc. I was scared to death....but it truly was a breeze.

Best wishes. I hope it goes well for you.

Re: First Colonoscopy - Very Nervous and Have Questions

My appt. is scheduled for next Tuesday, 6/10 at 8:00 am. I was told I had to do the GoLytely prep as that was the standard prep that they use. I don't think I have a choice. I bought some Crystal Lite lemonade mix to add to the GoLytely - I hope that will make it taste better or I don't think I will be able to drink enough of it. What does GoLytely taste like exactly?

I am just so scared of medical procedures and possible complications. I have never had any type of anesthesia, so I'm really nervous that I'll be allergic to it and die. I think I'd rather stay awake. Or I'm imagining that something bad will happen during the procedure, like they'll poke a hole in my colon or something and I'll need major surgery. I know its probably stupid, but I am a real worrier. Will they tell me right away if they found something bad?

Re: First Colonoscopy - Very Nervous and Have Questions

I don't have a clue what Go-Lightly tastes like but from what I've heard, it's the volume of liquid you have to get down. I understand your Dr's have a protocol for what they use but this is what my Dr's office recommened and I've read other practices use the identical prep. There are several out there. Miralax is just a newer one and easier on the body.

I think the potential of a compkication is rare, especially if you are going to a specialist. I wouldn't worry too much about that. the medication they use isn't a deep general anesthesaia like you would have for an operation. It wears off very quickly. I was on my way home in less than an hr after the procedure.

My Dr. told me immediatley that I had no problems and even gave me pictures of my colon and my stomach....If they have to take a biopsy for any reason that would take a few days before the report comes back.

Try to lighten up on your food intake starting Fri. That should make the prep easier on you. Also, I was told that once I started passing clear liquid, I could stop drinking the prep solution.

Let us know how you make out....You'll be fine....

Re: First Colonoscopy - Very Nervous and Have Questions

Thanks for the info. What kinds of food would you suggest I eat over the weekend to make the prep easier? I know that the day before I can only have clear liquids, but I was planning to eat normally (= too much!) over the weekend. On prep day I was planning to just have diet Sprite, water, chicken broth, lemon ice & lemon/lime Gatorade - does that sound ok? I wasn't sure if I could have colored jello - I know I can't have red or purple, but I'm not sure about other colors like orange.

Re: First Colonoscopy - Very Nervous and Have Questions

Hi
My instructions call for a reduced diet two days before the colonoscopy.
No nuts, raw vegetables, red meat, no seeds or black pepper., no high fiber.
All easy to digest allowed eggs, chicken and pork with no skin, potatos, pasta,
cooked soft vegtables green beens , applesauce, soups.
I am going in for my fourth colonoscopy in July and have had no problems so far with prep or procedure.
Good Luck, the idea is worse than the actuality.

Re: First Colonoscopy - Very Nervous and Have Questions

hey,

I hope I am not to late to offer my 2 cents. I am 50 and I have had a couple myself. The first one I didn't like the prep but it was't to bad. One thing you might do is ask the GI doc if he can give you something to help you chil out for that night. Not to help you sleep just chil a little. Somethings I did was eat the diet the doc suggest the day before the less solid the better. That night I was give halflytely (1/2 gallon) and I put it in the freeze and got it just above freezing. I also use the flavor packs. I got me some blackets, pillow and portable tv to watch some comedy and camped out in the bathroom that way no running needed. The next morning I felt weak and tired but got a ride to the outpatient. One they got my IV in I asked to see the Anestigeolist (sp) and asked if he could give me something to help me relax and maybe doze off and he said no problem. They usually have something on the order already. It was going to be about a hour wait so why sit there and be nervous. The rest was a dream. Woke up and went home and got something light to eat and to bed. I
