Pregnant BM problems

Hello,

I have been researching for a month or more and figured I might as well post. I am currently 8 months pregnant, due beginning of October. For a few months I have been having some problems with bowel movements. My first symptom was some blood on the stool itself and a little on the toilet paper. It's never been a lot but concerning to say the least. It has always been bright red. I went to doctor and he said probably hemorrhoids due to pregnancy. I asked him to confirm and so he did a proctoscope and he saw internal hemorrhoids. Not long after that appointment I started noticing thinner stools, mucus on the stool, and sometimes I would go to have a bowel movement and would just have bloody type mucus before the stool. I haven't had any abnormal pain. I asked the doctor at my next appointment for something unrelated about the thin stool and again he wasn't concerned because of the hemorrhoids.
I am 26 years old and never had any problems before like 3-4 months pregnant. My stool is not formed hard balls, it's normal color, just smaller with mucus and blood at times (not all bowel movements have blood and mucus, more when I strain a little, and then a day or two after).
My mom is Stage 4 breast cancer and to be honest, anything that goes wrong with me I instantly tell myself it's probably cancer...so a bit paranoid!
Does anyone have any reassurance that this is more than likely caused by the hemorrhoids and pregnancy and not cancer? I'm under the assumption that there really isn't anymore tests (since proctoscope done) until after pregnancy?

Thank you so much for listening. It's hard feeling like there could be something seriously wrong and not being able to know for sure. Is it a good sign that the doctor did see the hemorrhoids?

Thanks,
Tylette

Re: Pregnant BM problems

I think listening to your doctor is the best advice. Your situation is not something anyone here can give advice on. Chances of your problems being colon cancer are slim to none but only your doctor will be able to follow-up with the proper tests.

Re: Pregnant BM problems

Tylette,

Most likely your doctor is right. I have so many hemorrhoids from pregnancy and pushing that I have considered surgery. The symptoms you list can very easily be explained by the pregnancy and the fact the baby will be pushing all of your internal lower organs around. Constipation will occur most often in pregnancy and from that straining, hemorrhoids, then more straining leading to bleeding, and so on. Things seem different while carrying a child and the fact you see most of these things when you strain only tells me that it sounds more like effects by the hemorrhoids and your baby.

If after your baby is born you are still worried, go to a GI doctor. I was 28 when I had my first colonoscopy (that is a whole other story), so do not resign yourself to needing to be 50 to get tested. I would guess though, that most of your problems will cease after the baby makes its presentation. Try to get this topic off your mind and more onto the baby as when you finish having your children you will miss these times. Enjoy them and let the worry take a back seat.

Good luck to you and your child.

Re: Pregnant BM problems

Thank you both for getting back to me so quickly. I am really reassured by this. I am a huge worry wart, especially since my mom has stage 4 breast cancer. I will definitely talk to my doctor again if I continue to have problems after our baby is born. Thanks again!!!
