When should I have the next followup colonoscopy?

I thought I would start my own thread instead of jumping in on someone else's thread.

I have my first "surveillance" colonoscopy 2 1/2 years ago. There were 5 polyps all under 1cm. Four were hyperplastic and one was a precancerous tubular adenoma. The doctor at the time told me to wait 5 years for a follow up colonoscopy.

I recently had a parathyroidectomy. There is literature that links previous parathyroid disease with the increase in risk for certain cancers (colon cancer being one of them). So I switched doctors and just had a follow up colonoscopy. I am not supposed to hear from the office about the biopsy until next week. There were 3 polyps found (one in transverse colon, one in sigmoid and one in rectum). They were all about 5mm. I spoke with my GP and she said she already had the results. One hyperplastic and one tubular adenoma. (I wonder about the third). When the doctor who did the colonoscopy or his nurse call in a couple days I will ask about the one not mentioned in the report. What timeframe should I be looking at for a next check? I believe this doctor said if everything is OK, I should wait 3 years. Thanks for your help, Hoppy

Re: When should I have the next followup colonoscopy?

I live and work in China so my specialist is Chinese. I had a small flat polyp in the end of second stage removed. It was not in pre-cancerous stage, but close to it, I was told. I have to have colonoscopy again in six months and, following that, only if it is totally clear, I will need one every three years. However, if I had had so many polyps and one pre-cancerous, I would want a colonoscopy every year to be on the safe side, no matter what the doctor said. I know its nasty but colon cancer is a horrible way to go.

Certainly the doctor who told you five years seemed pretty negligent. My polyp grew in four years, I believe, as I had one of those very expensive scan things which takes half an hour and three previous days of purging four years ago and nothing was to be seen. I can't remember the name of the machine but it cost an arm and a leg! This was over a completely different tummy problem, by the way, but they were checking me out for cancer.

Best of luck to you and I hope the rest of your test will be negative.

Re: When should I have the next followup colonoscopy?

Five years seems way too long. I had my first one at age 56 last year and they found and removed one tubular villiform adenoma with high-grade dysplasia. I think that's pre-cancerous. This year they found only an innocuous polyp and he told me to come back in 5. I know these things are very slow to turn cancerous but having seen one pop up in the year since the last test, I'm not waiting 5. It may be 2 1/2.

Follow your instincts on this one and don't wait too long.

I have a relative who had very similar biopsy results and her doctor told her to come back in one year. If everything was clear then, she could wait for 3 years.

Re: When should I have the next followup colonoscopy?

Well, I didn't even get a phone call like they said I would. I got a letter stating polyps were both hyperplastic and adenomatous. Follow up in three years. That is all. It just seems strange to me but i guess I shouldn't worry.

Re: When should I have the next followup colonoscopy?

The time between colonoscopy varies depending on age of the patient and the severity of the polyp, I imagine. I had a precancerous polyp removed 2 1/2 years ago and was told to get another colonscopy in 2 years, but circumstances wouldn't allow me to do that so now I am 6 months past the time suggested. I am having it done this Monday morning. Hopefully I haven't waited too long! - Ench

Hoppy I would feel better if you could schedule another colonscopy in less then 3 years. I waited 6 months pass the time for my recent one which was a little over a week ago, as it turned out all was ok this time. He told me to get it done again in 5 years. NO WAY! I will go back in 2 years to be on the safe side. This is nothing to be careless about as you know so err on the side of being overly protective of yourself. Take care of you - you are unique, one of a kind....be safe and worry free! Ench
