Colostomy and working?

After many years of incontinence and recurrent diarrhea for years and after several sphinteroplasty repairs that have failed. My doctor has discussed with me options including a permanent colostomy. I was wondering if there are people who have had a permanent or even temporary colostomy and continued to remain employed....if so what type of jobs? My profession requires me to be able to lift fifty pounds and I wonder if lifting will interfere with the colostomy bag...as in the abdominal pressure causing it to 'pop off'???

Re: Colostomy and working?

Most people find life with an ostomy is not much different than before. People who need to do heavy lifting can do strengthening exercises for their abdomen and lower back and wear a support belt. This is not much different than from anyone who has any type of abdominal surgery. The main problem would be a hernia around the stoma. After you have found which appliance and products work best for you there should never be any problems with the appliance "popping" off. The best advice is to make sure you have an ET nurse or WOCN (ostomy specialists) do a proper siting of the stoma before surgery. Also check around for ostomy support sites on the web for experiences and advice from those who are living full lives after this type of surgery. Most often you'll find people experiencing happy, active and healthy, "normal" lives!

Thank you for responding. I am nervous about this...of course I have heard horror stories ie: waking up in bed with poo everywhere etc. I am thankful that I have the 'option' although at this point I don't see it as an option since I am a prisoner of my house/bathroom/washing machine. I can try another colon-rectal surgery and 'again' hope for the best but each time they try to 'fix me' I risk more nerve damage and or worse conditions.
