Exclamation I need some advice; IBS or something serious?!

Hi there!

I''ve been experiencing chronic pain in my lower abdomen for almost a little over a year now... At first I didn't think anything about it- figured it would go away on it's own, until it kept persisting and further woresening. I went and saw my Doctor and he was positive that it was IBS, taking my young age (im only 18) into consideration, sent my to a gastroenterologist and he said the same. But my symptoms have sky-rocketed and the pain is almost unbearable! I've had almost about every blood test possible, also done fecal samples, urine tests, lower and upper abdominal ultrasounds, and a barium enima... next test I get is the good ol' scope (colonoscopy).

I am very frustrated because all of my symptoms feel too severe to be IBS, but my Dr. didn't take me very seriously; and this has affected every aspect of my life! Anyway figured I'd give the board a shot and see if anyone else was having the same problem/ have been diagnosed just so I could ask my specialist some questions the next time I went in.

My symptoms are;
-Chronic pain in lower left side of abdomen
-Aching/stabbing back pain
-Weight loss (went from 115lbs- 80lbs)
-Loss of appetite/painful when eating
-Frequent urination
-Spotting between periods/irreagular menstral cycle
-Frequent need to crap, never feel completely empty
-Thin, pencil-like stools; mucus and looks like onion skins
-Orangy/reddish haze around stool
-Fatigue
-Anal pain (feels like a twisting screwdriver)
-Nausea
-Vomiting
-Constipation/Diarrhea
-Abdominal swelling (in pelvic region) and tenderness after injestion
-Feeling full without eating
-Palpitations/Anxiety/Dizzyness
-Fevers/Chills

And I don't know if this has any relativity but I found a what the doctors told me was a cyst on my ribs, and over the year since I had it looked at it has grown and it swells and also becomes very tender and sore. Had the doctor look at it last week, and he didn't really express any interest, saying cysts grown and can do this too. I'm not too too worried about it, just might be the key to unlocking the answers I need! I feel as though I'm wilting away, and I look the part as well, and I just want to figure this out so I can deal with it!

Thanks!

Re: I need some advice; IBS or something serious?!

Have you consulted a gynecologist? Some of your symptoms may be consistent with endometriosis, which is a condition where tissue that is normally in the lining of the uterus, migrates into other areas in the pelvic region and causes pain. Another possibility could be cysts on your ovaries. Have you been tested for lactose or gluten intolerance? There are so many possibilities of what could be causing your symptoms, I am glad you are getting a colonoscopy cause that is the gold standard for determining what might be wrong within your colon or rectum that has caused changes in stool and pain, possible polyps, ibs, colitis, etc.

More importantly, if your MD is not taking your complaints seriously, get a consult with another MD, preferably at a teaching or major hospital where the MDs have a wide range of experience. In addition, there is no such thing as being to young for a diagnosis and ruling something out without doing the proper testing first.

Hope you find the answer to what is causing your pain.
Leslie

I haven't went to see my gynecologist with any concerns- but that sounds like my next step. I have been in for both the lactose and gluten intolerance blood tests, and they both have come back negative.

Went and saw my gastroenterologist today, and got the appointment date for my colonoscopy... and I have to wait until november 11th! (rememberance day- how freaky... ) So I am praying that this doesn't further worsen! I also found out that a cousin of mine has colitis, does that run in genetics?

And I'm thinking of going to Lockwood clinic in Toronto for diagnostic testing if it get's any more severe before my appointment. Hoping it won't have to come to that but after over a year of testing and getting nowhere I'm really considering it.

Thanks alot!
