My Mum has just been diagnosed with colon cancer

I have just found out via a phone call from my Mum that she has bowel cancer. She did a 'poo' test abot a month ago and it came back with blood in it, they asked her to repeat it, again it came back with blood, she has now had a colonoscopy on Monday and she phoned me yesterday to let me know she had bowel cancer. My mum will be 73 this Christmas. They say she will need to wait until next Wednesday to get the results of the biopsy and then needs to wait a further week to have a CAT scan. Is this normal, it sounds so slow. I am just so scared and this has hit me so hard. How long after the CAT scan is done will she know the results. What will the biopsy results tell her. The thought of losing my mother is petrifying me. I have read that the survival rates are far higher in the USA than in Europe and that is also worrying me a great deal. I too have had cancer previously but mine was a chondrosarcoma for which I have had a total shoulder replacement. Would this make me more prone to getting colon cancer as well? I am 36 years old, should I get checked?
What are the next steps for my Mum? I will post again as soon as I know any more information about her stage of cancer. Any answers will be so appreciated, I feel so lost right now and everyone around me is trying to play it down, but I know it is serious and I just want someone to talk to me seriously, thank you.

Re: My Mum has just been diagnosed with colon cancer

Hi,
I am very sorry about your mom. I truly hope she gets the best treatment and medical advice. I am not a specialist in this, so I cant say whether such treatment plan is slow or not. But if you trust your doctors, then everything should be under control. I also dont think that you should compare US and Europe`s rates, cuz everything depends on the individual. And inner belief is the strongest cure! If I were you I would probably get checked just in case, so that I would be able to care and be supportive to my mum even more.
Take care and be brave!

I am so sorry!!!!!!!!!!!! I don't even know what to say, but I wanted to tell you that cancer is not a death sentence. The biopsy will most likely tell them what stage the cancer is in, then they will know how to treat it. As far as this being slow, it isn't, this is pretty normal length of time. It depends on her doctor how quickly they will give her the results, every doctor is different.

My mother had cancer twice.....................she didn't die of cancer. The last time she had cancer she was 70 and had all kinds of other health problems, I was about your age and terrified. My mother weighed 220 and wasn't even 5 foot tall. The doctor told me that she would die, but she fooled them all. Since she was so heavy, the surgery took over 8 hours, and not only did she survive, they got all her cancer. The next day she had a massive heart attack, so they put her in ICU, she survived that heart attack and the cancer, and two weeks later I was driving her home. Miracles do happen.

Colon cancer is one type of cancer if caught early, the survival rate is good. So hopefully they caught your mums cancer early.

in answer to your other question.................since your mum has colon cancer, the doctor will probably suggest that you have colonoscopy (I think it is ever 5 to 10 years, but I am not sure about that).

I will keep you, your mum in my prayers.

hugs
Daisy

Re: My Mum has just been diagnosed with colon cancer

Thank you so much for your reply. It is just so good to 'talk' to someone else who knows through experience, what I am feeling. Everyone around me is trying to play it down. I know they are only trying to help in their own way but it is making me feel more alone and isolated. Also, I live a few hundred miles away from my Mum and all I want to do is be with her, not listen to people tell me how insignificant this problem is.
Once again, thank you for sharing your experience with me and giving me hope.
With affection,
Miabee x

Re: My Mum has just been diagnosed with colon cancer

Miabee,

This sounds very similiar to how my hubby's colon cancer was discovered. He had ignored early warning signs but then finally told me he was having problems about 6 months later. When they did the colonoscopy the Dr. could see there was something there and was pretty sure it was cancerous but had to do the biopsy and then we had to wait for that to come back before we could see an oncologist and get further testing. His was a slow growing cancer and had been growing for years.

I would wait to go see your mom right now she will probably need you more if and when she goes thru treatment such as chemo and radiation if they decide to do both or whatever (or even surgery).

I know the waiting is awful. I would suggest to her to make sure she goes to a major hospital for treatment. My hubby was able to get in to a drug trial (his ended up being stage 3/4) and that saved his life so to me we were very lucky to be at the hospital we were. If we had stayed at the local hospital the gastrologist had suggested ....well, I just don't know what would have happened. So tell her to go big!!! Even if she has to drive an hour away.

Here if you need me.

Re: My Mum has just been diagnosed with colon cancer

Hi my mom was put in the hospital November 14 , 2011 and they found a mass in her colon which turned out to be cancer . The cancer has already spread to both lungs that are now covered and they saw two spots on her liver . They did surgery and removed a section of her colon and along with that 2 of her 11 lymph nodes that had cancer as well . I take her to her cancer dr tomorrow for her first visit and will find out what stage her cancer is but another dr already said its most likely stage four since its spread to other organs already . I am her only child and I am scared out of my mind . My mom worries about me and I am trying my hardest to be strong for her . I am a single mom with five children and don't know how to even began to explain to my children what is happening to their grandma. I am hoping for some good news tomorrow that we have a fighting chance to beat this . So I want u to know I understand what ur going thru and I hope you and ur mum the best . Let me know how things go and I will do the same here. Take care and lots of hugs
Kristelis

Re: My Mum has just been diagnosed with colon cancer

It is normal to have a CAT scan. I was sent to a general surgeon after that with the CAT scan disk in my hand, he viewed the disk and then referred me to a radiologist . That resulted in 22 treatments of radiation, which was not bad until the end. Then I had a lot of internal itching and skin burned. Sit baths and topical cream help, but Lortab was finally needed as I could not sleep. Plus while having the radiation I was placed on Xeloda (Chemo-oral pill). Once that was over, I was told I need a port put in my chest for ongoing chemo. Which, for me was a sign of more long lasting chemo but possibly in a stronger dose. Doctor says I will need more tests like CAT scan and blood work to see how the type of chemo is working, they will adjust if needed. Apparently they base everything on the bloodwork. I hope this helps you in the fact that there are other people going through this and that we all have sympathy for you and your mum.
