I am 18 years old, and I am scared that I have colon or anal cancer.

HEADS UP - I go into graphic detail about what I'm going through.

I have always been anxious over things that most people don't worry about, but for the past two months I have been VERY constipated. I have probably used the bathroom naturally less than 10 times in 2 months, and even then, it is never a solid big stool like I usually have,it is always loose, watery, and piled on top of each other(kind of like pudding) GROSS I know. The reason I did not immediately go to a doctor is because ever since I was 4 or 5 years old, I have had constipation problems, and even when I'm not constipated, I tend to only have a bowel movement every few days, which for most people is constipation, but when I was younger, the doctor said that there was nothing to worry about and I was fine (He gave me reasons why I only used the bathroom every few days, but I can't remember them, this was like 10 years ago).

Anyways, to get back on track, at first I thought it was just an EXTRA long bout of constipation, but about a month and a half ago, there was an instance where I had a bowel movement, and then when I wiped, there was a lot of bright red blood on the toilet paper, but none in the toilet, and from what I could tell, none in my stool. I worried and told my dad right away, and he said not to worry as it was most likely hemorrhoids (He has them) because the blood was fresh. So anyways, I have not had blood after a bowel movement since then, but now, just this last week, I started having slight sharp pains in the left side of my stomach, and occasionally in my pelvic area. I looked on ***** and it said that pelvic pain is a symptom of colon cancer in the later stages, which worried me to the point that now ALL I think about is "What if I have cancer", "I'm only 18, I don't wanna die", etc. I used a laxative earlier and when I went to the bathroom, my bowel movement was really long and as thin as a pencil, Which ***** ALSO says is a sign of colon cancer. I have a Doctors appointment set up for tomorrow and it is for a check up and I'm going to ask him to refer me to a specialist. I know I probably seem insane, and I have always been very anxious about things, but there is OBVIOUSLY something wrong with me, I just don't know what.

Also, I found a small white/clearish lump right outside the entrance of my anus today, that was not there a couple of days ago. It is pretty much painless, it's more of an itchy annoyance than anything. This terrified me because now I am wondering "Why me, why does this have to be happening to me?" I literally have so many scary symptoms of a colon or anal cancer and I am very scared.

No one on my Mother or Father's side has ever died of colon cancer, so that kind of makes me feel better, but I have most of the symptoms for colon cancer that I see when I check online.

Has anyone ever has a similar experience and found out what wrong with them?

Re: I am 18 years old, and I am scared that I have colon or anal cancer.

Yes, those things do happen to people with cancer, but in someone your age, cancer is one of the least likely explanations. Some people do have irregular bowels, and there may not always be a reason found. The tendency toward bowel irregularity may run in families, though, and there may be ways to manage it with diet. And constipation sometimes causes slight tears around the anus, which then bleed on the toilet paper.

You might have irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), or it might be caused by a medication you're taking, or it could be a food that doesn't agree with you. Get it checked out by the doctor, but it's very unlikely to be cancer.

Thanks for the reply, it means a lot. Do you have any idea what the white/clearish lump might be? I'm just wondering because as far as I know, I have never had this symptom before.

You are showing great maturity by seeking out an appt. to find the answers. So many people just delay and delay because it isn't a comfortable subject. I'd suggest that you make a few short notes before your appt. so you make sure your Dr. understands that you have multiple concerns. Good luck and let us know how it goes. Hugs.

Re: I am 18 years old, and I am scared that I have colon or anal cancer.

I went to my appointment today. The doctor asked me some routine questions, felt my stomach, took my temperature, etc. She then checked my anus with her finger (Gross, I know :P) and she said I have hemorrhoids, and that is what the bump on my anus is, and is what most likely causes the blood I see on the toilet paper. She said it sounds like I have irritable bowel syndrome and that it's what most likely is causing the constipation and stomach pains. She said she does not feel worried at all about the possibility of colon cancer because of my age, and the fact that it does not run in my family, but because I worry so much, she told me to schedule an appointment with a GI specialist for a colonoscopy so I can have peace of mind and put this anxiety to rest.

She then took a blood test to see if I am anemic, which I should know by Wednesday. She said she highly doubts I am because I do not show any signs of anemia.

I'm pleased that the Dr. addressed your concerns and you will soon know for sure that your issues are not fearful. When you meet with her again it might be wise to discuss your anxiety issues. She may have worthwhile suggestions
on how you can ease that stress. Good luck.

Great, glad you got some answers. I'm sure the colonoscopy will come out clean.

For now, you may as well assume it is IBS and start looking into ways to manage it through diet. Whole grains, veggies, fruits and meat each affect the bowels differently. Meat tends to slow them down, fruit speeds them up the most, and whole grains act as a very gentle laxative. See what meal plan works for you.

Re: I am 18 years old, and I am scared that I have colon or anal cancer.

Believe me you are doing the right thing. I'm 50. I was just diagnosed with metastatic colon cancer. I thought I had hemorrhoids and diverticulitis. The Dr. says it has been going on for a few years since it has already spread to my liver. I was planning on getting a colonoscopy at 50 like the recommendations say. There wasn't any in my family either until just a couple months before my diagnosis I had a cousin with the same thing. Thankfully hers had not spread but she's older than me. Now in my immediate family we have 2 with colon cancer and 1 with breast cancer that are all on chemo. I will likely be on chemo the rest of my life due to the lesions on my liver. I'm sure your situation will no be that way but you are getting it early just in case so you aren't looking at what I am in a few years.

yes,i have the same exprience with you but doctors told me that colon cancer is least likely at this age.some told me it is better to visit gasteroenternist for colonoscopy raher than ruleoutting disease by epidemiology.
