PLEASE I NEED ADVICE AND HELP
I have had an extremely bad "sore throat" under the adams apple in between the collarbone area for quite some time now and have that nocturnal acid reflux that has recently gotten worse despite increasing my PPI's and Zantac. I also have chronic sinusitis and post nasal drip. The ENT said he can not see beyond the adams apple with his scope--that it is the part of the esophagus. The gastro doc did an upper endoscopy 2 years ago and said I had some gastritis and esophagitis. I assumed he looked at the sore spot in my "throat" (which wasn't this sore then). I recently got a copy of the report on my own and he was talking about at the bottom valve. When I asked him about the upper spot he said he can not see there with the scope --- that is for the ENT????????? Who do I go to so I can find out what is going on there?? I am afraid I might have cancer there. Isn't that where the upper valve is? Don't know if the dry mouth I have is contributing also. I have just had that since last March.

I am scared and don't know what to do. I know the post nasal drip is not helping the throat but the gastro doc doesn't seem to be worried about it. Also, I have recently developed an allergy to both synthetic and natural rubber (latex and non latex) and fluorinated rubber is in the tip and angle of the endoscope. My sinuses did swell up about 20 hours after the nose scope (I get delayed reactions) and I am scared also if I talked the gastro doc into doing another scope that my esophagus and throat will swell up after I am home. What would happen if I couldn't swallow?

Hi Suggi - there is ony one valve the LES which is just above the stomach. believe me the endoscope checks the esophagus from top to bottom. The throat area before it becomes the esophagus will have been checked by the ENT. A barium swallow might be a good test as it would show any ulcerations in the entire esophagus from top to bottom - I think you would have ulcerations before the cells would change to barrets/cancer - which is very un-likely as this takes years...

Unfortunately I can not do barium. I have a very slow digestive system and once had an upper and a lower with bad results. I had a call from the doctor (a different one back then) both times who said I would be in the ER if I did not take at least 3oz of MOM as it was not moving. I was there with the upper more than 3 hours waiting for it to get through the small intestines. I had already taken 1 oz. I got a terrible infection from the 3 days of diarrehea that spread to the front area also. He told me never to get a barium anything again. With my Crohn's I can not get diarrehea now as I bleed. The last time I had bad diarrehea I bled for 8 hours coming from the colon and was on high Prednisone dose. Can not take Prednisone now either because of severe osteoporosis. I am stuck there. So, you mean my gastro doc is wrong when he says he can not see the area under the adams apple? The ENT said he can't get through the "glottis or something" and that is for the gastro guy. ENT did see a little acid splash when he looked but nothing significant but he said he didn't know what was beneath there. What else can you suggest????
