My husband (59) was diagnosed with kidney cancer Sept 04 and had his left kidney removed in Oct 04. You can expect to be in the hospital anywhere from 7-10 days depending on your recouperation rate. You will be in some pain post-surgery, so do not be shy about asking for strong pain medication. My husband was on a patient assist morphine IV which gave him a certain amount of medicine hourly and allowed him to push a button for an extra amount if his pain increased. It managed the pain well. You will need someone to help you for a little while after you get home as you would with any other type of major surgery, as you may still be on some strong medicine to continue relieving your pain until you are healed.
