Mother with MRCC - advice/guidance appreciated
My very healthy and active 73-year old Mother was diagnosed with RCC last December (2010). They caught it fairly early and she was able to undergo a partial Nephrectomy this past January 2011. At the time of the original diagnosis, they noted some small nodules in her lungs but (per my parent's reports) these nodules didn't "light up" on the scans, so they were not considered a risk/concern. The Neph was a success and the mass removed. She has healed well and felt tremendous. Hope and Optimism are 2 of her greatest strengths.
At her 6-month check up this past week, the scans showed a notable growth in the nodules in her lungs. She met with her general MD yesterday and he indicated that indicated Metastasized RCC. He gave her a "guarded" prognosis and scheduled her to see her urologist/oncologist this Friday. They discussed IL-2 and Chemo briefly, but my parents are awaiting their meeting with their specialist to learn and plan more.
I really want to understand what my mother has to look forward to and where (anywhere in the world) is the best treatment and research being done. I would appreciate any recommendations for doctors or centers; as well as any stories about what this process entails. Anything that would help me support my parents, especially my Mother, through these early stages of understanding and negotiating the illness.
I have also struggled to find any good sites that grade doctors and centers - any recommendations????
Thank you for your time and advice - it means the world to me!
