Unhappy Iressa - Please HELP

dear all,
I'm 32 yrs old female with NSCLC stage IV. I was diagnosed October 2002 and had completed 6 cycles of chemo and a course of radiation. Exactly 2 months after the treatments I started to feel back pain. Upon a bone scan. it was confirmed the tumors have mets to the bones. It has been 1 month since the bone scan and I have yet to do anything. My oncologist did offer the use of Iressa and bishophonates. The later is fine with me, but iressa??? I have read few articles on it and is seems to be frightening... A lot of patients on it develops sides effects and many of them died resulting from it, only after 2-3 weeks. I seek you all to help me share some experience on the drugs for me to decide to go on with it or not. My dr advice me not to delay on the treatments. Please.. Please...

Re: Iressa - Please HELP

Your story seems similar to my dads. He had NSCLC Stage IV, with mets to the bone. Once the bone mets showed his oncologist put him on Iressa. Dad had a 30 day supply, he had some minor side effects, nothing too severe. After being on the Iressa for 3 weeks the docs found the lung cancer to come back in both lungs. He had tumors all throughout his lungs. They gave him 2 months. He lasted 6 weeks and he just passed peacefully on Thanksgiving morning. Iressa did not work for my dad but I have heard many many stories of it working and clearing up and shrinking tumors. I have a friend who is the cancer program director where I work, she too says that if Iressa is going to work you would know in a week or so of taking it, I would try it, I'm glad my dad did, at least he was able to say that he tried everything.

I wish you luck, you will get through this, and my thoughts and prayers are with you. If you ever need to talk, you know where to come. This forum has helped me out tremendoulsy with my dad's sickness. There are a lot of knowledgable people on here.

Thanks medphoto for your story and I'm truly sorry about your father. I have to see my doc this afternoon with the answer. Actually. I'm very worried to use it coz right now I'm having some coughing ( which come back after my trip to Mecca.) I'm afraid this will lead to ILD ( some kind of lung infection) which thru my readings most of patients using iressa developed it. Can I ask about your dad condition prior to using iressa? I mean his cough, pain at bones and other places like liver? Because I'm having all those right now...

My father has never had any problem during his treatment with Iressa. In fact he is in a complete remission at the present time. The ILD you speak of is reported in less than 1% of patients taking Iressa in the US. Radiation and/or chemo treatments are by far more dangerous than Iressa and they in fact have higher rates of ILD than Iressa.

My dad's condition prior to using Iressa was not so good. He had mets to the bone from the lung cancer for a few months, then they did an x-ray of his lungs and found another spot on the lung, immediately after they found the spot on the lung he started Iressa for 3 weeks, then he went back and they did another x-ray of the lungs to see if the Iressa was working and his lungs were covered in tumors. I don't think the Iressa contributed to this, I just think the cancer took its natural course and unfortunately the Iressa didn't work for him. But I have heard some great stories of Iressa working for some people. Dad had severe pain in his hip while taking the Iressa, he never had pain in his abdomen and he never did have a bad cough. I wish you luck, please keep us posted on how you make out. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Oh My God all theese stories sound so familiar. My Mom was mis diagnosed for over a year also she was told she had Phnuemonia, bronchitis, copd, then in an emergency room through a chest x-ray they found the fluid which was found to be cancer. She had her first thorencentheisis (drained fluid from the lung) I am not sure on the spellings of these medical terms please forgive me. Then she had a plueradecis, that is where they put a tube into her chest and pumped the fluid from the lung for 3 days then they sealed the area with a talcum powder. That was not succesful. The fluid built back up and overflowed through the path the tube was inserted and busted through the incision point and oozed down her back. She was on chemo a drug called Tax- something that is all I can remember of its name she went through the 3 cycles Then was put on a new chemo called Gemzar (SP?) Then it was found to have spread to her bones, lower spine and left femur. So she was put on Irresa. Now she ended up in the hospital with a lung infection. An infection that the infection and disese specialist here in Las Vegas cannot even identify. They put her on so many antibiotics she was vomitting constantly. She could not keep anything down then she became dehydrated. So then they had to rehytdrate her. Then she was back in the hospital because of the fluid build up. But the fluid is so thick now they cant get much out at a time. And this is where we stand today. She is at home in severe pain, with fluid building up again, and back on the Gemzar chemo. But she still vomitting everything she eats. Her Dr. told her to just eat again after she vomits. Dear God what do we do now?

Re: Iressa - Please HELP

Hello everyone, I am in the same boat. My Mother has stage IIIb lung Cancer. She was a smoker all of her life, she is now 61. She is really bad off right now and it dosent help that my Dad is in denial. And he is still smoking. She was diagnosed in March,She had 3 thorencentesis done, then the pleorudecsis and sealed with the talcum powder. Which was unsuccesful. She was on a chemo whose name was tax..... something I can't recall. She had no spreading with that chemo and was on it for 3 months, however the fluid did fill back up and ran through the same route the tube used for the pleurodecsis went through and began ot ooze out of the incision point. She then had a bag attached to her back to catch this fluid. So she was then put on Gemszar, that had less side efects but the cancer spread to her bones, her loer spine and left femur. Then she was put on Irresa! After 3 1/2 weeks of that she became very sick she had a very bad cough, fever and was admitted to the hospital they first called it an abcess of the lung. Then they called in a infection and disease specialist. Well the infection could not be identified. She was put on 5 very strong antibiotics that made her very sick. She could not keep anything down fluids or solids. So then she became dehydrated. They had to rehydrate her take her off the Irresa, and sent her home. She was back in the hospital 4 days later for another thornsentesis. They could not remove much of the fluid this time because it was soooo thick, even after stopping the antibiotics she has not been able to keep her food down. Her Dr. tells her to just eat again after vomitting. She was put back on the tax-a something chemo, two days ago and she is still unable to keep any fluids or solids in her system. If anyone knows of a better cancer treatment center please let me know. We are in Las Vegas Nv.
