Post Dad has Poorly differentiated squamous cell carcinoma.....

he has a spot in his upper right lung, a bump or growth on his upper right shoulder, believe he has it in his right lymph knode (can't spell). He has told me that time for him on this earth is getting very short. Is he correct with his prediction?

He, my Mother, and one of my sisters went down to the University of Michigan today and he has an appointment tomorrow to find out what they can do for him. Is this whole thing as grim as what Dad and others are telling me? Thanks for any responses.

Oh yeah, he's 71 and has smoked for almost 50 years.

Well, not necessarily. Depending on how extensive the cancer is. If it's spread, (for example to his head), he probably has about 4 mos...but it doesn't sound like he has any brain spread or you would've mentioned him complaining of something like weakness, headaches etc. etc. But if it hasn't spread, he'll be treated with surgery + radiation because you mentioned that one of the lymph nodes is positive. His cancer is a "non small cell lung cancer" which is normally treated with surgery. In this case, what they'll do is a total pneumonectomy (because of lymph node involvement), radiation to his chest, and also preventative whole brain radiation.
