Help! I just had a cat scan, after an irregular chest x-ray,

and my doctor wants me to come in ASAP for more bloodwork. I'm 38, smoke 2 cigarettes a day, but did have a pack a day habit for almost 20 years. Is there anything else it could be besides cancer? I have 5 young children between the ages of 2 and 8.

Re: Help! I just had a cat scan, after an irregular chest x-ray,

Sorry to hear of your situation and i hope that it is not cancer. Hopefully your follow up appointment is very soon i know how nerve racking it can be.

I am 41 female with a 2 pak a day habit and i have been smoking for 28 years. my kids are grown up (at least in age) and i have the most precious 3 year old grandaughter who lives next door so she calls me everyday to ask "Grammy can i come over". Today i don't have the energy or the breath to answer the door. In February i was diagnosed with a hole in my heart from birth and i am to have it repaired along with a valve but in the meantime my symptoms have gotten worse and my cardiologist didn't feel that all my problems were related to my heart as i have had pneumonia for the past 3 months. A repeat xray should some changes in my rt. lower lobe of my lung so he referred me to a lung specialist who is sending me for a cat scan and lung scan next week. They put my heart surgery on hold until they can figure out whats wrong with my lungs. I'm not sure i want to find out and i haven't been able to stop smoking yet, the only thing i can take to help me quit is the gum and it has helped somewhat as i am down to about 6 aday. It's very difficult and today i have been crying most of the day, not sure why as it's not like i didn't know that smoking could eventually kill me, i just didn't think it would be this soon.

Good luck to you and your family and hopefully you can be mended either way.
Sue.

Re: Help! I just had a cat scan, after an irregular chest x-ray,

Hang in there you guys...just because there is something on your lung doesn't mean you are dying. I know you are scared - been there!

I had a nodule that had characteristics of a malignancy, and a lesion on my liver - both discovered on a CT scan. Looked like lung cancer that went to my liver. I had a 10 month old daughter and a 12 year old daughter when this was found - the guilt was overwhelming along with the fear of dying (and suffering). I literally fell to the floor whe I got the news. This was a year ago.

The liver lesion ended up being a large cyst, the nodule was benign - had the surgery to remove it and biopsy it - I smoked FOREVER - am 44 now and smoke free for 10 months (quit the night before the surgery).

Here's my advice - don't be consumed with fear - be proactive and aggressive with any tests or treatment - go with your instincts. Surgery was what was best for me -- could not live with the possibility of cancer growing inside me - never slept, ate or smiled. Surgery was not that bad and my life is ssssoooo different now.

Do what you feel is best for you - ask others for support - keep yourself busy - have fun - hang out with friends - watch funny movies. Don't let it take over your entire life...it is a bump in the road and may turn out ok. If it is cancer - it is not a death sentence -fight it and win.

Re: Help! I just had a cat scan, after an irregular chest x-ray,

The radiologist called my doctor right after the scan - lots of nodules, clusters. He told her he didn't think it was cancer, but maybe sarcoidosis. I'm seeing a lung doctor on Tuesday to schedule a lung biopsy - however, the word lymphoma was also on the report, as well as emphysema.

Re: Help! I just had a cat scan, after an irregular chest x-ray,

Moira, best wishes to you for good results. My husband's tests showed a single large nodule along with with extensive scarring from emphysema. The single nodule and its placement on the lung was very much a red flag. The man didn't even get a cold so lung cancer was a shock. But, he smoked 3 packs a day for 35 yrs and it definitely took its toll. Keep up with smoking cessasion and take a day at a time. Enjoy each day when you feel good and be good to yourself on the days that you don't feel so good.

Hugs and prayers,
Jan
