Scienceworker,
I am the wife of the 33 year old you spoke of. I wanted to put your mind a little at ease. If they took an xray any mass/tumor would show on that xray.
When my husband went in for an xray it was just a general xray he had to get done for work. The spot on the lung was there. It has grown immensly since then but the smallest spot they will see. Trust me.
Now I am not a doctor. But if there was cancer in the lung they would see a spot in that xray. Then do a biopsy to see if its malignant. As far as losing weight. People react differently to different situations. Some people when depressed eat and eat and gain and gain. I know when I am depressed I do the opposite. Some people get to anxious and lose weight. Some gain.
If you want to get a CT done for your own piece of mind then I think you should do it.

I hate to say this but not all lung cancer shows up on an X-ray often it takes a CT scan to see the tumor. My mom's X-rays that she had when she had pleural effussions did not show any sign of a lung tumor,nor has it shown up on any of the Xrays done since then.It did show up on a CT and by then it was Stage IV NCSLC. I know it is not that uncommon for lung cancer not to show up on X-rays. I do have a question about your weight loss, are you eating as much or more then you did before you started lossing weight, or has the anxiety and depression made you eat less which would be responsible for the weight loss? Sometimes with cancers people are eating the same amount or even more yet losing weight because the cancer itself consumes so many calories. If the only way you will find piece of mind is to get a CT then try to get the doctor to order one as anxiety harms your body in many ways .Best luck to you and Hurray for decideing to give up the smoking.

First of all, I want to say I'm so happy to hear that all is well with your mom.
I can tell you from personal experience that my mom's lung cancer was found on an x-ray. (A mass showed on her right lung that turned out to be NSCLC.) I do know that depression can cause you to loose weight, and not to downplay your weightloss, but 10 pounds in 1 year really is not alot. I do think that if it will ease your mind, a CT will definately not hurt. Good luck with that and with quitting smoking!
