need advice

I have written in a couple of times about my mother who was diagnosed with SCLC in June '05. She had tumors in her left lung, lymph nodes, liver, spine and hip. After radiation and chemo, scans showed no signs of the cancer when they were done at the end of December '05. During the last couple of weeks she has started having symptoms like she had when she was first diagnosed -- strained breathing (even wearing her oxygen) and back pain where the tumor was in her spine. She had an MRI last week and the dr. called today and said that everything looked fine. She feels rotten though. Could the cancer still be there and the MRI did not detect it? I am not sure what to do now. Should we get a second opinion? Has anyone else had this situation? Thanks for any advice that you may have!

Re: need advice

Hi
I always thought they did Pet scans when re checking for sclc, but guess each doctor is different. I know when my husband completed chemo in Sept. 05 he had a reduction of cancer in his body and the pain and subsided and he felt pretty good and did not have "cancer pain" anymore. The week before Christmas he started feeling more pain like he use to before chemo and was feeling terrible and taking pain pills all the time. The Pet scans showed he had become resistant to the 1st line of chemo and the cancer that had shrunk during that chemo had all come back to his orginal starting point. Each person might be different though cuz if I remember correctly Tuckygal who has beat SCLC mentioned she still does have aches and pains. My husband never had radiation so I do know that can have some painful side effects. But odd that your mom was actually feeling good and then all of a sudden does not feel well. Tuckygal comes on the posting board so hopefully she can share with you any experience. That is great though that your mom had clean scans! I hope infact they are clean and what great news that someone else has beat this terrible disease. I just hope and pray she feels better soon.
Kim

Re: need advice

hullo....I think maybe you should ask the onc for a PET scan. Sometimes they reveal more than the CT/MRI show. I cannot fathom why your mom is sp what she is except that there may be more involved than it appears. Best wishes to you and lots of prayers, love, and hugs to you...

Re: need advice

Thanks for your advice. I wondered why the onc did not do a PET scan. I don't understand how they choose one scan over another. My mom has had CT scans, MRIs and PET scans at different times. There is just so much to try and comprehend medically along with dealing with all the emotions. Thanks for the support.

Re: need advice

I know your Mom has been through a lot. I am sorry to hear she is having pain. I still have some pain in the areas where radiation was directed, and I know the chemo is so hard on the veins. I tend to panic a little when I have some pain, and two scans so far have been 'clean' whatever exactly that means. Small cell tends to come back and I would definitely keep asking her doctor what the pain could be from. You are all in my prayers. Love from Ky., Pat

Re: need advice

Thanks for all of the advice. This is truly an uncertain journey that I have not experienced before now. I just want to do whatever I can for my mom to help with the quality of her life. I am sure that I will have more questions.
Thanks again!
