Is it OK to visit someone w/LC if you are getting a cold?

My mother was dx w/NSCLC Sept. 30. On Oct. 13 she had an upper R lobectomy. The mass (adenocarcinoma) was 3.5 cm. In a sampling of 11 lymph nodes, cancer was found in one. She had a rough time recovering. She was weak physically going in and spent 6 weeks post op in a rehab center. She just went home 11/29. I am scheduled to fly to see her tomorrow night, and feel as though I'm getting a chest cold! Should I postpone? I certainly don't want to put her at risk, but at the same time I feel as though she shouldn't live in a bubble either. I know she's had all her flu/pneumonia shots.

I'm sorry my first post on this board is so selfish…it is out of concern for my Mom. I know nothing about the vulnerability in this situation. Thank you in advance.

Re: Is it OK to visit someone w/LC if you are getting a cold?

i have lung cancer so i will try to help. if you are really concerned you can get those disposable face mask at any pharmacy and wear it when you are around her . i maybe wouldnt kiss or get to close. i know that is hard but it also depends on other things like do you have a fever. then you definitely would be contagious. i would go but just may be take a few precautions like some hand sanitizer and antibacterial soap and maybe the masks for when your really close to her. but you are right we need to be cautious but you cant live in a bubble. if your really not sure you could always check with the nurse at her doctors office. good luck i hope you get to go.

Thank you. If I do go I will stop and get some masks and more hand sanitizer. Thanks again.
