Question what does the ct results mean? cancer?

I had an auto accident 1/10/07 (hit a tre at 70+ mph), I was unconcious and the hospital took alot of tests. I had no broken bones and only a concussion.
My doctor got the results 2/7/07 and told me he can not treat me for the accident until I find out what the results mean.
I had a ct w/ contrast on 1/10/07 of my lungs (ribs were not broken or fractured) and it says there are multiple irregular densities on the right upper lobe , posssibly representing foci of pneumonia or pulmonary contusions. The is a 1/2 inch oval nodular density in the upper right lobe, which may represent a pulmonary contusion, focus of pneumonia or a true mass lesion.
IMPRESSION: right upper lung field densities may represent pulmonary contusions, foci of pneumonia or and overlying lung nodule. Reevaluation and follow up is advised.
We recommend that locm to be used in this patient instead of ionic contrast material.

I used to airbrush cars(etc) and never wore a mask. I refinished my floors sanded them and stained them a year ago w/o using a mask, I have been exposed to 2nd hand smoke my whole life and started smoking a year ago..I had a larg basal cell tumor removed from my throat in 2003. Both my grandparents died from cancer ( one had lung cancer and one had colon cancer). my father was told last year that he has masses in his lungs but wont get it checked out. I am only 22, since 1/10/07 until now I have gone from 143 lbs to 129lbs, my chest still hurts increasingly and feels like its not "healing" from the crash. I get sick when I eat, had a low grade fever for no reason for the past 3 mons....What are the chances that I have lung cancer? what do the ct scan results mean?I am a bit scared....

Re: what does the ct results mean? cancer?

Don't believe it's cancer until all the tests are in. I know it seems difficult at the moment but try to keep positive.

There was a weird blip on my EKG last year (routine checkup). Now, I was just 30 years old and the doctor said to me that it was probably nothing. I was diagnosed with NSC lung cancer a month later. I thought it was the end. But I could not give up without a good fight. My daughter was only 3. That was one year ago. I'm still battling it. The point is... even if it is cancer, it's not the end of the world. All that worrying is not going to help your body heal. Find inspiration where you can and keep focused on it.

I pray that your tests will clear you of any doubt and fear. Keep the faith.

Re: what does the ct results mean? cancer?

xyz is right! You have to keep a positive attitude because it will only help you. They found a nodule in my upper right lobe a couple years ago and because it had grown they wanted to remove it and test it for cancer. I am only 27 years old and have also been around second hand smoke most of my life. As it turns out, after a thoracotomy and lobectomy, they found it was a benign hamartoma, thank God. I know that it's hard to be upbeat and positive when you don't have answers. Just surround yourself with your family and friends and think good thoughts. It will all be okay! Keep us updated.

Btw--xyz, I admire you for your postive attitude. I hope you keep getting better everyday.

Re: what does the ct results mean? cancer?

Thanks for the positive response. I talked to my pulmonary specialist, my apt is for march but he told me to see my primary care dr to get a comparible ct done before hand. I talked to my primary cre dr and after he got all the info on me, he scheduled me for a PET scan, another CT scan, and more bloodwork for this thursday. I try not to think about it but I dont think the dr would have given me a PET scan this soon if he thinks its nothing...Oh and I just found out my dad had a pet done cause he had modules on his lungs and drs say they're on his lymph nodes but he refuses to get biopsies....

Re: what does the ct results mean? cancer?

I had a PET scan early on as well. They found it by xray and then did a CT scan. I was then referred to do a PET scan. That came back negative, however they still couldn't rule out cancer, although they were 99% sure it wasn't. So, they monitored me by CT scan for 2 years. If it had shown no change over that time, I would have been fine. However, it grew from 2.8 cm to 3.2cm, so it was decided to have it removed. Don't stress. Your body really will need all the strength you have to get through surgery if that is what you end up needing. I know it's hard, but worrying will get you nowhere. Keep us updated.

Re: what does the ct results mean? cancer?

I think a PET scan is the next step. They found I had a 6mm nodule upper right lung by accident on CT scan, I followed up with a PET scan ( which was suppose to be negative not visible) but it was visible and it Uptaked the tracers so now I need to see a surgeon. They cannot exclude maglignancy on my nodule( even thoough its in an atypical location) because it did light up on PET scan. Its also now 8mmx9mmm . I am terrified. I am a non smoker who lives with a smoker ( my DH) I have no symtoms now but a few weeks ago had horrid right upper chest pains that took me to the ER where they discovered the nodule. I think you should definately take the PET scan they can see so much more than CAT scan and mine was a combo scan I believe to further narrow it down. Your Dad I am afraid has the same reaction I initially did. Both my parents died in their early 50's of cancer several aunts & Uncles too My older sis has has melanoma now..Its not a question of what I'll get its a question of when. So I initially thought just to disregard it .... but I have children and a grandchild.I am only 50 and I want to live.

Re: what does the ct results mean? cancer?

yes. they did the test but I drank a 1/2 pitcher of beer the night before (ooops. i regret that). that was 7 hrs before the tests. My friend said it wouldnt effect the results but I confessed to the drs office they said it might have so the results are no good.... they said nothing showed up though. so I dont know. I have been sent to the hospital 2x since I last posted cause I couldnt breathe and they put me on 200%(?) oxygen. They said the last time was due to a stress induced stroke....did know oxygen could be 200% or you couldnt breathe from a stroke....I discharged myself before and offical diagnoses cause my car was left on the road and was vandalised.
