new here several questions - Cancer: Lung Message Board

my dad has been diganosed with extensive small cell lung cancer he started out with having pneumiona (my dad has not been to the dr or hospital in over 34 years) well my mom had to take him to the hospital and to make a long story short he has metatastic small cell lung cancer he smoked for 55 years and has stopped after diagnosis anyway i have several questions but first i will tell you that the cancer has spread to his,spine,hip bone.some ribs on both sides,both lungs,lymph nodes,sternum.rt femur and lymph nodes by his bladderall his organs organs are fine he looks good most of the time other than tired and nausous after chemo which is he is cisplaton and eptosode the dr.s say his prognosis is a slim to none chance but i am a firm believer in God and think prayer is the number one key to survival i am just scared i mean this is my dad my number one buddy i have 2 small children who think the world of my dad i am an only child i guess what i'm lookign for is nothing less than a miracle is there any one out there that can shead some light on this situation???all the stuff i read on here is so grim is there any where i can go that say's anything positive???or anyone that has positive encouragement??? my dad has has his second round of chemo and a follow up p.e.t scan results not in yet but i need advice sorry for rambling just worried than-you in advance signed daddy's girl-sam

First of all, always have faith and yes there are miracles and with a positive attitude and prayers you never know what can happen! I hold onto that everyday for my husband. My husband has extensive small cell(at the time of diagnosis it was in his lymph nodes, liver, bones, brain, adrenal gland sure I missed somewhere, but gives you an idea how extensive his is) and when he was diagnosed in June 05 they told my husband he had 8-16 months with treatment. Well, Stan is approaching the 23 month! I won't lie that it has not been the easiest 23 months, but during that time we had many laughs and smiles and some beautiful times with our boys. Sad to say Stan is not doing very well at this time and is slowly struggling more as each day passes, but I thank God for the good days we had. Stan's first line of chemo was Etopside and Cisplatin like your dad's treatment. Stan had a 30% reduction of the cancer in his lungs and liver from that treatment and is just finishing up his 5th line of chemo. He keeps a positive attitude, which I think has kept him going too. Also, Stan was never a smoker so the doctor said he thinks that is to his advantage. I cannot live in denial and do know my husband could be taken from us anyday and I must somehow keep things as normal as possible and raise our boys. (17 and 10 years old) If the SCLC is caught in the limited Stage then the chances are much better as there are some who post on this board that are cancer free! I wish I could share some better news with you, but being honest with you. This board is a wonderful place to come visit and do hope you can find some comfort. I lost my dad in Feb 06to cancer and there is a void in my life, but I continue to share stories with our boys about their granddad and they think of something funny he did and share it with us as we try to be very open with our feelings. My two boys and myself had to attend a funeral for a friend of ours yesterday and as we were driving to the reception after the service my youngest looks at me and says he thinks he understands why people die and told me God wants it that way and we must understand that. (naturally I was speechless)
Anyway, now I am rambling, but thought I would share.
Stay positive and keep us posted. I do hope your dad responds well to the chemo!
