Is this lung cancer?

Hi, I am a 46 yr old female and I have had the most excruciating pain in my upper mid back/left lung area for a long time now. It started out as an annoying feeling like someone was sticking pins in my back - a few months later I was in hosp for 5 nights with pneumonia. The pleuritic type pain has never gone away but 3 chest xrays show it's clear?! It feels like a cross between a burning, twisting, deep gnawing pain that is just getting to the stage where it seems to be there all the time. Even codeine with paracetemol doesn't really help. I also have been getting recurrent hoarseness to the point where I can hardly speak!! That started again today & my back pain feels much worse. Last couple of days I have also had bad headaches, ear ache, a feeling of my neck being 'bigger' even though it isn't (don't know what that's all about!!!). I have had about 5 courses of antibiotics in the last couple of months as I had 'crackles' again in the left lung recently (now gone).

I don't like to keep bothering the doctor as I work at the practice & don't want to seem like a hypochondriac!! I have been in & out of hosp over the last couple of years for different things & feel like I'm being a real nuisance!
After the last clear xray my doctor, who is very lovely & caring I'd like to add, said that it must be muscular & I might just need to live with it so I daren't mention it again! It really doesn't feel muscular - it feels really deep & gnawing but perhaps I am being a hypochondriac!

I also have intermittent shortness of breath & days where I have absolutely no energy & just feel really awful. (I also have coeliac disease so am on a gluten free diet.)

As I am sat here the pain in my left lung area is getting worse & feels like someone is twisting a knife in my back!! My voice is very hoarse to the point where I'm practically whispering but I have no sore throat.

What should I do? I really want a CT scan just to put my mind at rest but don't want the doctors where I work to feel like I don't trust their judgement. Should I pay for one privately perhaps? Does anyone know how much they cost in NZ?

Any help or insight into what might be the problem would be very much appreciated

Re: Is this lung cancer?

Do you have health insurance? If not, I would definitely still get a cat scan of your lung without a doubt. Not to scare you, but the symptoms are similar to what I have read about lung cancer. i have lung nodules and am seeing a top notch lung specialist in NYC this Thurs. I am nervous about it. But because of my nodules i have researched lung cancer symptoms. Go for a cat scan for piece of mind. LaLa

Re: Is this lung cancer?

Hi Lala,

Thanks for your quick response I have decided to see one of the doctors at the practice where I work & ask for a referral for a CT scan & if he doesn't think it will be possible I will ask him to recommend a private one. No we don't have health insurance but I don't care at the moment as I have been feeling for a long time that there is something not quite right inside me and this will either confirm the worst or put my mind at rest - either way it has to be better than wondering, doesn't it?

What are lung nodules? Is it the same as lung cancer?

Good luck with your appt Please let me know how it goes

Kind Regards,

ukgirl1

Lung nodules or nodules of any organ are growths. Most often not cancerous but they have to be watched because they can become cancerous. I don't know what this dr. is going to want to do. He might say, let's do another cat scan in 6months and see if they grew or he want want to biopsy them. We will see. But I am worried. Good luck with your test. Please let me know what happens. It will probably be a few weeks before you find out anything. I found you on New Posts. You might end up being on the lung cancer thread after a while. I don't understand how this web site works. Its weird. Sometimes I get a response in my e-mail and sometimes I have to go a post that I was on and try to remember who I responded to and click on that and see if I got a response. I probably sound stupid, but I can't seem to figure our exactly how this works. What about you? Do you have this problem? I would give you my e=mail directly but I don't know if we are allowed. Anyway, good luck and keep in touch. LaLa

Re: Is this lung cancer?

Hi Lala,

I'm also a little confused about how the website works!!! I have just had an appt with GP who has sent off a referral to see if I can get a scan on the National Health - he said I should know within a week or so. If not, I will go private - he has given me a couple of names & phone numbers.

He didn't seem to think the hoarseness was connected to the pleuritic pain as he said that was more the larynx but I thought it was one of the symptoms of lung cancer so I am a little confused!!! Unless, he was trying to put my mind at rest a little!

Anyway, I will be able to keep track of what the answer is re: the referral as I put all the new notes on computer so have access to my own - very handy!!

Not sure if we are allowed to swap emails or not - perhaps we could find out?

Re: Is this lung cancer?

Am still waiting to hear if I can have a CT lung scan or whether I need to pay for one. Trouble is I'm now wondering if it is more throat related as I am frequently getting this hoarse voice & also sometimes feel like there is a lump in my throat just to the left of my windpipe. It's not painful but just feels like it's there. Also, sometimes when I swallow food it feels like it hasn't gone down properly & I have to keep swallowing until the sensation goes. Getting a few left sided pains in head & also occasional ear pain. Has anyone got any views on this - it would be most appreciated

Re: Is this lung cancer?

Hi UKgirl:

I have not heard from you in a long time. I was just browsing the lung cancer board and noticed our conversation. What is going on with you these days? How are you feeling? I am going to get a pet scan this wednesday to see what is going on with my lung nodule. I went to a top specialist and he wants to remove this thing. He feels that it is small but growing and feels that it could be cancer. I am worried sick. I also have pains on my left side kind of on lung area. I am very nervous. I also have problems with swallowing just like you. Hope to hear from you soon. LaLa

Re: Is this lung cancer?

ukgirl - The throat related discomfort you describe sounds like it might be related to your thyroid. Thyroid issues can cause hoarseness and swallowing difficulties as well. Nodules can develop on the thyroid (most are non-cancerous, by the way). A general practitioner could do an initial check by feeling your neck - but an ultrasound is probably the best way to see if you have a nodule or other issues. BTW, the main test given to check thyroid function, measuring TSH, is not in itself a precise indicator of thyroid health. My TSH always came back in normal range yet I did, in fact, have thyroid function issues.

Re: Is this lung cancer?

Lloydat62 You may not have Cancer at all , But 99.9% of the time cancer does not show up on an X-ray ( X- ray is for bones not soft tissue where the Cancer might be. If you are really concerned about having cancer ask your Doctor to send you out for a upper body CT scan with Contrast That is a chemical they give you through an I.V. that causes cancer to light up and makers it easier to find Or you can request a full body PET CT with Contrast They will scan you from the top of your head to the bottom of your feet, This type of scan can also tells Them many other things about your body.
Good Luck
