| Biopsy taking weeks to come back
My mother was hospitalized with pneumonia, and the doctors found a spot on her lung that they suspected to be cancer. After a CT scan, they performed a needle biopsy of her lung. She was given an appointment with her pulmonologist for one week later to receive the results of the biopsy. The day before her appointment, her doctor's office called to cancel because they had sent the results to the Mayo Clinic, and the results were not back yet. Another appointment was scheduled for one week later (tomorrow). This morning, the office called to confirm the appointment only to call at 5:00 pm to cancel again due to the fact that the results are not back yet. They will not give us any information, other than to tell us that the biopsy results were sent off for a 2nd opinion, and they do not have any of the results to tell us anything more. They said it could take 2-4 weeks for the results to come back. We spoke with the receptionist on both occasions, and we have yet to speak with the doctor despite asking to do so today. Has anyone else been put through such a long waiting period? Is this the norm? We are all scared of the results, and we would like to get it over with and start treatment ASAP if needed. A pulmonologist as well as an oncologist looked over the initial results prior to sending them out. Should we consider this to be a no news is good news situation? Should we consider switching doctors and repeating the biopsy? Sorry for the long post, and thank you for any help.
